Abstract for this talk:
Many things encountered in our everyday lives are easy for humans but are very difficult for computers, such as navigating a constantly changing world, and understanding the meaning of human language. It is the goal of AI to allow computers to operate in these difficult domains. Logic-based Reductionist models of the world have proven inadequate for the task. Alternatives to Reductionist Models have long been used in the Life Sciences. These methods have to be considered an important alternative or complement to existing approaches to AI. If time allows we will examine some possible implications of these alternative ideas to the likelihood of an AI singularity and/or a SkyNet like takeover scenario.
