Despite their minimal sound, Mtume was one of the most colorful funk and soul groups to emerge in the early ’80s. Their classic tune “Juicy Fruit” has been sampled often over the years, most notably in Notorious B.I.G.’s “Juicy.” In this episode of beat:repeat NYC, Mtume talks about the tune and then takes us to a neighborhood boxing gym for a few rounds. Later, Black Moon’s Evil Dee samples “Juicy Fruit” yet again, showing off his skills on one of hip hop’s iconic machines: the SP-1200.

beat:repeat NYC is a celebration of iconic New York City anthems and the drum machines that underpinned them.
