    What camera did you use?
  • Miky Wolf 10 months ago
Warren, This was a note that Damian our DP wrote to another Vimeo user asking about the process. Posting it here because I think people will find his insight to be very helpful.

'Chickamauga was shot with an Arri SR-3 w/ Super Speed lenses although rarely did I choose to shoot wide open. Many factors dictated that decision including depth of field, focus constraints for any ac and weather conditions.
With regards to the Bolex and Arri-S, each camera/lens package provides a very distinct look. I've shot w/ both somewhat extensively and found goods with the bads. One prime example would be the Bolex c-mount lenses. Although some may like the general soft palette and quality to those lenses specifically, I found them quite unfavorable more times than not. However, for one sequence, I further enhanced the softness which enriched the scene immensely. The more common issue I personally have pertains to the body's shape and weight. Essentially, it's a little too convenient in the "street photography" realm for its lack of scale and weight. Handheld can be difficult resulting in an avoidance of fluid-like movement. However, don't let the above deceive you. Each camera can benefit the production as long as it's accomapanied w/ a good sense of lighting and design. I can not stress that enough. The camera/lens doesn't make the movie....the crew does. Keen eyes, an understanding of story in relation to light, etc. all define moviemaking. The most important thing is to learn... always know you're a student of filmmaking learning something new each and every day. I always remind myself of that. - Damian'

Saw this at the 2008 Austin Film Festival with Summerour in attendance. A really great short, all-around quality. Loved it!

That was amazing. Cinematography and editing was awesome, however i was kind of left in the dark at the end. Other than that, WOW.

Great Story that had me very intrigued. But the ending needs rewritten. It needs to go somewhere. Does the kid get the girl. I take it he does. But the real underlying question for me is, what does the kid do about the fact that he knows the bastard from the crematorium is just ditching the body's. Needs a new ending. The writer needs to know where he's going and actually get there...with his audience in tow.

    Great Cine work and acting.

    Cheers - Duke.

Superbly realised and crafted - a pleasure to behold.

The Story does not really conclude to the complete satisfaction of the viewer but taken as 'Chapter One' it is pretty compelling.

A rare and wonderful Vimeo experience.

    Good luck to All concerned,

    Bob

This film was shot in Chickamauga, Georgia. That excites me because I grew up there, out of all the places in the world.

And also, this story is probably based on a true story because there was a crematorium that dumped dead bodies in the woods nearby Chickamauga and they discovered the place, they found hundreds of dead bodies that were claimed to have been buried.

My dad was an investigative FBI agent on that case.

    Really well done.

When I lived in Chattanooga and was still working in news, I covered that crematory story (for what seemed like an eternity). I look forward to Sahkanaga.

    Again, really well done.

I can honestly say after watching this and sitting in as an extra on set today that I can not wait to see the movie. It should be an awesome story with great actors and directors. These people are so talented I am so excited to have had the chance to be a part of this wonderful story. Much thanks to you guys for letting me be an extra and I hope this takes you all far, because you all deserve it.
