13. Spring on the Kancamagus - Letus Extreme Film - HDTV
2 years ago
I shot, edited and narrated a short documentary of my travels down the famous Kancamagus Highway (route 112) in New Hampshire.

With record snowfall in the area this winter, I wanted to see how much snow remained. I also wanted to see how high the lakes, streams and rivers were.

I hiked into Sabaday Falls with my Sony PMW-EX1 fitted with a Letus Extreme 35mm film lens adapter, a Vinten Vision 3 tripod, my homemade dolly system and my bag of lenses.

The waterfall was spectacular. The water was very high. I did not bump into another soul while I was shooting. I had to make two trips in with all my gear, leaving the dolly track near the falls while I snowshoed back to the car to pick up the more expensive gear.

The weather was overcast most of the morning and dry, but around 11am while I was at Sabaday Falls, the rain began to fall.

I was slipping and siding all over the place trying to lay dolly track in the rising waters of the very cold stream. I decided, after almost dropping my EX1 in the drink, to head out and shoot another day.

I got enough footage to write a story around and I edited it on my Mac Book Pro in my car while the rain blasted the windshield.

I edited the short using Final Cut Pro. I used the three way color corrector to add some saturation. I graded the color in each shot using Magic Bullet Looks.

Please go to my website, tomguilmette.com for my blog on the trip and production stills from behind the scenes.

You have some excellent work. I saw you posted a link to your dolly system you built in a previous video, but the link is now dead, do you have a new link?
  • Tom Guilmette plus 2 years ago
check the link at the bottom of my description. or you can just go to my blog at my website, tomguilmette.com

    thanks!

Awesome camera work, Tom! It feels like a new approach to the Ken Burns doc, but with video. Are you putting your tracks in the water to get some of these shots? And the overcrank on the footbridge was spectacular.

Thanks for posting this, great work!
  • Tom Guilmette plus 2 years ago
Yea, the tracks are in the water. check out my blog on my website, tomguilmette.com for pictures of my dolly system in the stream.

Where did you get the wheels for that rail system?
  • Tom Guilmette plus 2 years ago
They are simple skateboard wheels I bought at a sporting goods store.

Wow. Another fantastic video. The dolly shots are gorgeous! Great V/O as well!

Have you thought about adding comments to your blog? I read your blog quite often and its awesome that you show the reader how you got the shots you did!
  • Tom Guilmette plus 2 years ago
Currently, I can only add comments if I use apple's dot mac. The problem with that is the bandwidth. Apple does not give me enough when I am streaming HD video files on the net. A lot of people are using my site at the moment. I do have a forum and a chat room (on bottom of main page)

Incredible video. Your narration reminds me of the PBS series "Alone in the Wilderness."

You're a braver man than I to set up your dolly system in the water. Thanks for the behind the scenes stills on your blog.
  • Tom Guilmette plus 2 years ago
no problem. i loved "alone in the wilderness."

    This is truly spectacular!

The camera work, the sound (music and narration), the editing and yes.. the colours too :) ... all are wonderful

The duck scenes are probably the most amazing part :)

Very nice. I only wish you had the sound of the falls in the edit and some other "nature" sound here and there.
  • Tom Guilmette plus 2 years ago
i agree and wanted to do that. i just rushed the edit and did not have time to foley the sounds of the duck or add the rumble of the falls. but you are right.

I like the colors, naration, and the camera movemets. My favorit shots were of the hand rail by the steps.

I didn't, however, like the vignett. It's distracting and IMHO doesn't add anything to the shots. I can tell it was done in post (or at least I hope it was) but it brings to mind the accidental vignetting people get when using 35mm adaptors.
  • Tom Guilmette plus 2 years ago
the vignette was not done in post. sometimes when i rush a camera setup, i do not push in far enough through the letus adapter to get rid of that effect.

it really does not bother me as much as it should. but if a client saw that and did not want it, i would be much more careful of it (or fix it in post).
  • Chris Fallon 2 years ago
Oh, ok. That's probably why it came to mind, LOL.

But seriously, I do see that as a major part that needs improving. But aside from that everything else was spot on and I enjoyed it.

    Cheers!

Awesome video. Very impressive. I can really see your work evolving. This kind of evolutions is the best thing about Vimeo. I can't wait to get out with my EX1. Hopefully some luck this weekend.
    (I really need a proper tripod :( )
  • Tom Guilmette plus 2 years ago
let me know when you do. i want to see it.

Wow, great work, Tom! I have never appreciated what one can do with tracks.

I am impressed! I cannot imagine backpacking in the cold and rain carrying all that gear in two trips. Happily, the results were worth the effort.

I think your footage is outstanding!!! I am trying to get the funds for a EX3 and Letus extreme or ultimate. So I am glad they are not available yet. Is there any way you could possibly put together a materials list for the dolly?

    Thanks for sharing :)
I liked the way you narrated it, it made me feel a bit like if had been there too.
    Loved the sleeping duck! :D

    I really love it
I see some burned skies, are they due to camera or CC.
I see some chromatic aberrations. Where do they come from?
  • Tom Guilmette plus 2 years ago
burned skies are from either over exposing the video to get proper exposure on the main area of the picture or it was done in post. keep in mind i have over saturated most of these images. tell me at what time you see the aberrations.
  • John Hope 2 years ago
3:16. It seems that ou have zoomed into the Letus frame.
  • Tom Guilmette plus 2 years ago
i do not own the letus ex1 acromat kit. i need to buy this so that i can get sharpness across the entire frame. i simply replace the stock acromat that is attached to my letus extreme with the new ex1 acromat. i just have to drop the $350 and wait three to four weeks to get it....

    i will keep you posted.

I realize the music was just low background, but I'm looking to get into documentaries like you, and I'm wondering where you got that music.

You certainly opened my awareness about the beauty of that area of the US. Good job.

Good video, but I think the narration needs a little work. It sounds like you read it. Need to give it a more relaxed approach and let the words flow. Remember narration & sound can turn people off quick.

Otherwise I think you got an great eye!!

it fits well w/ the subtle edit.

excellent piece Tom. Your delivery is almost a Tom Bodett in a sense, not as playful of course but kind of folksy in that way and yet still a nice documentation. The visuals are just excellent, the slight sense of 'risk' in losing the camera in the waters played well.
