ABOUT THE DOCUMENTARY "BECOMING AMERICA"
All significant changes and progressive steps taken by America, regarding racial equality, came from the people. The election of Barack Obama is the ultimate expression of this reality.
To reach this goal, the United States took a long and winding path involving the efforts of both black and white Americans. There are individuals and organizations, both black and white, which were groundbreakers in the fight for equal justice. Their fight is part of our story.
This entire march toward racial equality, centuries in the making, flowed much like a river, subject to the changing political terrain and the evolution of American thought.
Electing the nation’s first African American president in 2008 occurred because of years of struggle and sacrifice on the parts of those who came before us. We tell this story to document the people and events involved in the struggle, and to ensure that the historical significance of Obama’s election is not overshadowed by the complexities and extraordinary challenges our country now faces.
