In the period between November 2005 and August 2006 over 450 Africans from Nigeria, Ghana, Togo, South Africa, Benin, Cameroon, Burkina Faso, Libya, Gambia, Liberia, Uganda, Senegal and Zambia applied for an SoS passport. Originally, a few Nigerian artists had inquired about obtaining an SoS passport and initiating artistic cooperation with SoS. Due to the difficulties of transferring money from Africa to Europe, SoS waived the application fee and suggested a trade. In exchange for a passport, SoS was to receive original artworks of appropriately equal value, which were then presented in an exhibition. The intention was to support the creative potential of SoS citizens and create a cultural alliance.
