"I just love that nature is still right on our doorstep and yet you don't have to completely sacrifice the conveniences of living in an urban area." - Nicole Linfoot

Lesser Slave Lake Provincial Park stretches for 107 km along the east shoreline of Lesser Slave Lake, and is home to the Boreal Centre for Bird Conservation (BCBC) (borealbirdcentre.ca) and the Lesser Slave Lake Bird Observatory, which showcase more than 220 species in the migration monitoring facility. The Boreal Centre for Bird Conservation is northernmost bird observatory in Canada and the only educational and research facility in the world strategically located to study boreal birds on their breeding grounds.

Lesser Slave Lake and nearby Marten Mountain act as a natural barrier to migratory birds. Many migrant birds avoid crossing the lake and veer to the east, where Marten Mountain, funnels the migrants along the shoreline.

While banding and monitoring migratory birds, Nicole talked about her love of animals and birds, and the adventure, opportunity, and community to be found in Slave Lake, Alberta.
