This is an old video clip from when I was teaching kids in 2001. I found it while looking for something else on an external hard drive. These girls live in a part of South Carolina that is still very infused with superstitions and old traditions. They talk about "jumping the broom" at weddings and stuff like that.

I'm struck by what a natural sense they have of their own narratives, and how talented they are at telling stories. Think that's the Carolina in them?
  • dalas verdugo staff 2 years ago
yeah, that's the culture they grow up in.

I grew up in Charleston, SC. I was back home for the summer and teaching in Walterboro, which is in a rural area.

Was the camera on a tripod or do you just have amazing camera holding skills?
  • dalas verdugo staff 2 years ago
I've always been commended for my camera holding skills. I consider myself a professional cameraman, so I try to keep it steady.

It's fascinating the way the other girls just came in and provided that rhythmical beat as she told her story...amazing story tellers at that age.

And how they opened up to the camera with such brave and bold eyes made me cheery with a breeze of bravery.

Mighty nice. I like how all the girls get involved in the story, adding sound effects...and even music! BOOM, boom, boom, boom.

I couldn't pay any attention to the story because I kept looking at the bag and saying to myself: "What the f--- is CHIP THUNDER!?"

Oh, and those pigtails the girl has in the back make Pippi Longstocking envious.
