A simple experiment with shadows. I do a lot of stone carving and one of the little mantras I use while chiseling away is "It's all about the shadows". The carving only really comes to life when you cut deep and consciously develop shadowed areas. It's the shadows that you actually see when you view from a distance.
This is a stone carving of a head (cubist). I wanted to show the shadows and make it come to life.
Carved in Maltese Limestone from block by hand.
