The second in a series of leadership dialogues with young Australians, Hon Fiona Simpson MP, Speaker of the Queensland Parliament, invited past and present students of International House to discuss and debate why democracy matters.

According to a Lowy Institute Poll released in 2013, “less than half of 18-29 year-old Australians believe that democracy is preferable to any other kind of government.” Speaker Simpson considers democracy is a call to shared leadership, rather than delegated responsibility. The evening at Queensland Parliament House was an opportunity to listen and engage with young Queensland residents who have lived overseas, and start a conversation that a new generation will need to engage in, so they can explore why democracy matters.
