The Nature Deficit is a film about the state of environmental education in South Carolina schools. By interviewing environmental educators, school teachers, students, environmentalists, and employees of the South Carolina Department of Education the film examines the role environmental education plays in raising intelligent, environmentally aware students. Increased integration of environmental education into the current curricula has been shown to generate improved test scores, attendance, and behavior but is only being practiced in a handful of local schools. As a group of local university students volunteer to take their watershed education program to a local private school, the benefits of hands-on learning become clear.
