colin levy did the opening vfx scene didn't he? I've seen that dust storm before...
  • jared hogan plus 1 year ago
colin was a huge contributor and helped to bring my vision to the screen but matthew radford, a super talented craftsmen, was actually the vfx artist.

Shot on a DSLR or RED? This is absolutely incredible, beautiful cinematography. Great job on the editing too, all around you're a talented filmmaker
  • jared hogan plus 1 year ago
this was shot on a sony ex1. thanks for your kind words.
  • Kennon Fleisher plus 1 year ago
EX1 is a great camera, it looks very good. Your location is beautiful, at least in it's own respect. I'm used to living up in the mountains / valley areas here in Central PA, so it's really interesting to watch films shot in a different geographical region
  •
  • Nice cinematography. Did you shoot with anamorphic lenses or just crop?
  •
  • Priscilla Bertucci 1 year ago
very good! It was in NM right?

I would have guessed Utah, but New Mexico doesn't surprise me. You could have filmed that in Utah and no one would know the difference.

Beautifully conceived and executed. Made me think of Cormac McCarthy, in his Tex/Mex novels. The harsh and beautiful envrionment/reality. congrats.

Hey Jared ! Thanks for finding me !!!

Was really fun working with Colin on that Dust Storm. Funny though, I never got to see the movie untill just now.
    Looks great man, Congrats !
  •
  • Chad 1 year ago
matt, did you do the particle manipulation on the dust cloud? looks really good. maya I take it?
  • Matt Radford 1 year ago
indeed. no particles though. Maya has a cool way of doing volumetrics through its fluid system.

it can be used basically like afterburn.
  • Chad 1 year ago
    ah, that's pretty interesting...

Brilliant. Makes you really think about isolation and being human. All those long, lingering shots were very effective.
  •
  • Jeffrey Butler plus 1 year ago
    Well executed. Powerful.
  •
  • Brilliant. Reminds me of the mystery and austerity of Jarmusch's Dead Man. congratulations.

Unusual, powerful, fabulous landscapes. A really BIG short movie. Would like someday sign something like this, with this strenght.
  •
  • The post-work is astonishing!! It was like looking at a painting... that moved.

Great work guys! Can you give me any insight as to who the second guy was? Did he kill for fun? Was he stalking the first guy the whole time?
  •
  • Owen Andrade 1 year ago
I know this question has probably been answered already, but what did you use to shoot this?
  • jared hogan plus 1 year ago
    hey owen,

Loved the "guilt" elements as the first guy took the shoes {& estab., slowdolly, "happenstance" (not) framing), "slow = large-scale" for the storm}. Enjoyed & learnt lots.

So, link-dropping is kind of obnoxious but this is really similar to an animation I released a few months back, called "The Prospector." Same type of eerie, bleak landscapes, two main characters, no dialogue. It's interesting how we found similar moods and themes in two very different landscapes ("The Prospector" is set in Alaska.)

Jared, I went to SCAD my freshman year of college and was good friends with Chris Horne from RUF. Man, this video is it. Perfect execution and ominous pacing. This is by far my favorite piece I have scene from the vimeo community to date. Thank you for sharing it.

  • Reminds me a little of "There Will Be Blood." Great job. The shots, editing, color correction, it all works.

Hot film mate! Got a taste of No Country For Old Men in the scenery, soundscape and no dialogue.
Really well crafted to get you intrigued as to what's happening, specially the campfire scene... Love it man!
