In the troublesome days of Direct Rule in Northern Ireland the Labour Government were desperate to end the troubles by attracting American investment and giving jobs to the unemployed as an alternative to joining paramilitary groups. The Delorean deal was signed in 1978 along with other American companies that had opened for business in Northern Ireland. Delorean was unique however as it was tailored for both Catholic and Protestant's in its positioning and recruitment.
