Dick is right. "Every American should see this." It is real and it is striking. In some places it stands 18 feet tall and looks like the gates of Mordor. In other places, it is barely 10 feet tall and looks like it was put together with a stapler. It runs from the Colorado River directly into the Pacific. It is big, intense and intimidating. And it is unfinished. Gaping holes are everywhere. Physically it’s confusing. Politically it’s puzzling. Ideologically it’s complicated. But for Dick and Ron, who both live within a few miles of the border, defending it is simply a matter of protecting themselves and preserving their own beliefs. Drug smugglers don't come to the United States to make an honest living. As the recent killing of Border Patrol Agent Robert Rosas shows, the border is more than a moral line in the sand. The fence is real. We recommend a visit.

Objective. Artful. Potent Film Making. This engaging short reveals a glimpse of the reality of the current crisis and challenges ahead. This short also reflects just how important the internet has become more relevant then television and newspapers when thoughtful film making such as this is created to widen one's knowledge instead of dividing first. Thanks for the work here. keep it up! We are watching.
  • Thanks for the great feedback. We're really excited to see how many folks are watching the films and taking them seriously. Thanks for your time. Check back often. You can see the photo essays of each story here: californiaisaplace.com

Is it true that California's state government legalized marijuana and sell it in stores? What the federal government does not say anything about? definite, the problem is seen clearly... Regards.
  • Simon Packman 1 year ago
dope is heroine. and mj is illegal in cali without a prescription, but most cops don't care unless you have a lot, or a plant and you don't have a card. A person with a card can legal carry 2 kilograms of marijuana and own 2 or 4 plants i forgot how many but eh.
  • Espinosa Sangri 1 year ago
I appreciate your comment, I'm glad that someone will stop and put your attention on the issue, when someone with heroin, arrest and begin to investigate, he confesses: 'I started on marijuana'. Marijuana also is dope, too addictive and kills. In the case of heroin, if there were a buyer, would not have a distributor. The responsibility is shared. It would be nice, now, make a video showing a 'good children' using heroin because their parents did not attend. Am I clear?, That would face a liability. 'Borderland' is good work, you must submit another equally good to show the young american who, desperate, looking to buy heroin; while assuming responsibility as the country failed in the field. Greetings.

you say "Drug smugglers don't come to the United States to make an honest living." I say a man free of choice wont smuggle drugs. you know they do cause they cant make a living any other way. and second its not the dope killing people. its the sick decay of our society that drives people to excessive use of drugs. if it wasnt the dope it'd be liquor or something else. the border is not the start of our problems and you know that its not the solution either.

    Hi Jake !
    Thancks for your comment !
I believed for a moment that all american citizen were going back to the old "sheriff" point of view like "an eye for eye..." and bla bla bla...
Yes this documentary could be a part of the true but it's more complicated than it looks. It's about economy, about human being and it will be about global warming problems and results. Believe me or not drug will be a minor problem in the few decades...

Jake, Many illegal immigrants from Mexico who come to Arizona do NOT smuggle or sell drugs. Many make a living through honest, hard work in the U.S.A. They come here illegally, but they save their money from working hard in Mexico, and give that money to the "coyotes" to bring them over. Some of the coyotes are evil and exploitive, like those described here. I didn't realize that there were border agents who knew about the trophies, the womens' clothing, and that they cared. They seem like good men, both of them.

Ouya is correct, though. The aspect I noted is just one small part of the issue. It is very complicated. This is a great short film, because it shows one particular aspect of illegal immigration, AND makes clear how many other issues there are as well.

Beautiful vistas of the U.S. southwest. I live in Arizona. You captured the reality with visual finesse and dignity.

Natural creatures like ducks and geese can cross the border without showing identification or asking anyone's permission. They're part of the free world. Why is it that people need somebody else's permission to migrate from one place to another?
  • Colin Fahrion 1 year ago

Very well done. Obviously the video was incredible. The framing, use of blur and focus to draw the eye. The music set the mood perfectly. I really had to empathize with these guys. While I'm not a person to want the borders closed, there is no way these guys would want anything else. They are on the forefront of a battlefield that is hurting personally and continually. Great work and please keep this type of stuff coming. The only way we can evolve is through listening to each others stories. You're doing God's work, and coming from an atheist, that means a lot.

Props to the filmaking. As for the minutemen, I understand their position and frustration but the problem goes well beyond a watchdog at the border. My respects to them for their courage but far more can be done in other ways. Years gone by yet the issue still remains. Drug cartels are the cancer of our society but drug users are the cancer cells. Kids get hooked on drugs these days not because a catchy slogan or advertising by the cartels but by peer pressure. Being the "cool" kid is in someways the root of this whole situation. Without $$$ their would be no cartels.

    Really nicely shot.
Content however is frustrating. The people selling the dope are only as scum and the people that create the demand. The US has itself to blame for the border smuggeling.
