See all Show me
Some of them are full of black water. Others have become graveyards for old lawn furniture and rodent carcasses. They are shaped like jelly beans and manufactured by companies named Sunny Side and Champagne. Once upon a time, Fresno was the California Dream. Own a car. Own a house. Own a pool. Everyone wanted it and the wonderful world of credit made it all possible. But now, with the foreclosure monster running wild, the dream is dry. Thousands of pools are festering in the hot Central Valley sun. For most people this is tragic. But for some, it’s an opportunity.

A film by Drea Cooper & Zackary Canepari

    This is really awesome, guys.

Crazy to see the juxtaposition here between what the Dogtown guys did during a drought and what these guys are doing during a recession. Creative minds taking advantage of crazy times.
  • jonathan kaiser 1 year ago
I agree blake. creative minds can find good in anything, I reckon.
  • Daniel Markham 1 year ago
Yeah, I noticed the situational similarities & differences with the Dogtown guys right off the bat as well and I agree that what they are doing is creative even in the midst of destruction.

In fact, I thought it was so evocative of the Dogtown story that I named the post I made on it "Lords of Raisintown" (danmarkham.net/link/lords-of-raisintown/)

Interesting, though (and not to give anything away) that it seems "the dream" still lives, even in these guys who see the destruction it can wreak every day they skate one of these pools.
  • Chris DiBenedetto 1 year ago
What destruction? Are you talking about some philosophical "destruction of the universe/society/whatever?"

A bit overdramatic, this is just guys ripping, eliminating standing water where disease carrying insects breed, and maintaining the skater ethos.

As Blake mentions the juxtaposition of this is great. It's like the upside/positive, and also mater of factness of some of the statements. The mentality of the a skater, make with what you have. The american dream, washed up in a pool, being used for something, even in these hard times. It's like the "dust bowl" yet it has a very different meaning.

  • America lied to no one. … People lied to people. "The American Dream," is a phrase coined by a sales person, a real estate agent, picked up by the media, and repeated like parrots by people wanting to dream the partial reality.

We need not attack the dream to address the now. We do need to understand the reasons people say what they do, not just what they say. … But first, we have to understand that it is people doing the talking, not a country.
  • Cory 1 year ago
    This.
  • Robert Jakobson 1 year ago
Well, a sales person can not manipulate people that is a basic truth of advertising read David Ogilvy for proof, it was the politicians (ibid.). The correct way to rephrase it is:

"I as an human being bought a lie told in the name of America by politicians and because of that I am a slave in poverty, addiction, despair."

    Is that fine with you?

great film, great idea. i like that skating-nomads-thing.
treat those homes with respect - they've been the shelter of people's dreams some time.

and by the way - the scene on the highway in fast forward is - when getting unfocused - truly magic.
something like a "perfect moment" in film. you don't get that often these days :-)
    thank you!

I've always favored pool skating over skating the streets or skate parks. I don't know, I like the rhythm of it, how you can kind of just get in the groove of it and build speed, back and forth, up and down, well somewhat depends on the style in which you skate it...but somehow it just seems more organic to me, and I like the similarities to surfing that it has.

And as many other's noted, definitely makes you think of Dogtown, which I love. Great film work!

...to quote the gentleman at the 2:20 mark "people already look down on us...as it is".

Trespassing on a property to skate in a pool? Really? This ain't the beginning of the movement (Dogtown story, which i loved btw). A grown a$$ man that can't get his own house (or with his buds) with a pool to skate in? Yeah, I'm looking down on you too. Common dudes, grow up already! That's the real crises in this story.

These guys are worst than the people that bought these houses they couldn't afford to live in, and they have the audacity to go onto these abandoned properties and talk about the previous homeowners...just so they can skate. This is sad on so many levels.

Could be the best documentary ever made! Usually, documentaries that are about interesting subjects are cheap et boring to watch because they aren't well done and documentaries that are about boring things are pretty nice. Yours is very well done, the shots are great, very artistic and the subject is very interesting. You've succeded to tell a story through your shots and that's amazing! You've got the best of both worlds, that's fantastic, 5/5 for me guys! And keep skatin'

So glad that people are making documentaries with beautiful cinematography these days instead of just relaying on home video style quality and tactics. Thank you for your making this series.

  • Awesome video guys! I liked the whole feeling of it, and the grey tone of the vid suited just perfect to what has happened in the states lately. I wisited the us last year, and I've never seen so many houses for sale before. It was just crazy. And very sad.

My guess as for what kind of gear is used would be following: 5d Mark 2 but using a separate recording device to get the full resolution instead of the normal compressed file for CF card. The depth of black for instance look to high to be normal 5D shot on a card.. Lens wise i would guess 35 mm f:1.4 for most of their shots.. Its quite wide angel but very low depth of field.. Whatever your using its GREAT.. Thanks for 6 very good movies.. Looking forward to see what is next.
