This short film, FEBRUARY, was shot on a pre-production unit of the new Canon EOS 550D / Rebel T2i. This is UNGRADED footage straight off the camera (converted to ProRes LT first for easy editing). I used a "flattened" picture style as outlined by Stu Maschwitz on his blog: prolost.com/blog/2009/8/3/flatten-your-5d.html

Shot in 1080p with 25fps, except for the slow-motion, which was shot in 720p with 60fps and later reconformed to 25fps.

EDIT:
I updated the blog with a rolling shutter test and a short raw footage clip (straight off the camera) for download.

I can show you later - lots of night shots in my short film!
  • Adam Funk plus 1 year ago
I'm worried by the grain in a lot of the night shots.... very noticeable if watched in HD.
  • Nino Leitner plus 1 year ago
Yes but I think I could have reduced to ISO 800 (from ISO 1600) in some shots if I had an even faster lens (I had a 2.8 and a 1.4 could have saved my from time to time).

I think the grain is mostly tolerable in the shots above, only at the end - the foggy shots of the refinery and the headlights of the cars going by - it gets quite nasty. But that is due to the fog, the compression doesn't see to be able to cope with it properly. Also, you can notice some horizontal lines going through the image, which shows the CMOS sensor's structure. Also not very pleasing.

I think the clips look great. I can see myself buying 2 of the T2i's before 1 7d. That way one breaks, I have a backup, or just run both and have mulitcam. Then I would have my HVX200, 5d MK2, and 2 T2i's... Screw it, I'll get 4 of them!

what is your opinion about the KIT-Lens for normal usage.
  • Nino Leitner plus 1 year ago
The Kit lens is really fine considering its price, but don't expect to perform very well in low light. It is a useable standard zoom lens and good for daytime shoots, but don't expect anything to fancy for €100.
  •
  • Chris Lew 1 year ago

No! Was slowed down in post using CinemaTools.

Great video, Nino! I can't wait for mine to arrive tomorrow.

Is the 550D too new that FCP won't recognize it? Supposedly there is a FCP plug-in coming in March? Are you using FCP? If so, how are you setting it up to capture the footage from the 550D, anything special?

    Thanks!
  • Nino Leitner plus 1 year ago
I don't directly import the footage into Final Cut Pro. First, I transcode it into something you can edit with - some ProRes variant or even XDCAM EX.

  •
  • Pablo Vazquez 1 year ago
Very nice! well done in lot of aspects.

Also very interesting the fact you didn't grade it, but used a specific pictures style instead.

-How much did you see the rolling shutter "issue" on this new camera, compared to 5D2 and 7D?

It's great to see that Canon release an entry-level with such quality.

Sorry to mention this, but we must not forget that a whole community is still waiting for the same features on the 5D Mark II since lot of months...

To those 5D Mark II users, I recommend to check:

    5dmark2.wordpress.com

Those guys have been working very hard since early 2009, first to get the "Full manual control", and then to get the "standard frame rates" and other improvements (now just like the 550D which is a $800 entry-level, compared to the $2,500 5D2)

I'm a 5D2 user too, and I really hope Canon take MORE care of all of us who invested a several thousands in Canon, and still keep buying expensive FF lenses.

Thanks a lot for posting this video, and congrats for the great work
  • HugoSon 1 year ago
I totally agree – I really hope Canon will give us 5 D Mark II owners at least the standard frame rates with the long awaited firmware update. It’s a shame that they do not take us early adopters more seriously.
The video is great and I like your work – beautiful. And thanks for the “flattened” picture style hint!

  • Nino Leitner plus 1 year ago
Thanks Pablo & Hugo, I appreciate your comments.

I assume they must have some sort of problem with updating the firmware of the 5Dmk2 to support all the frame rates of the 7D and 550D. It should have been published ages ago. Don't forget: the 5Dmk2 was the first DSLR to shoot 1080p, and it is now 1.5 years old already. There might be technical limitations.

It's already rumored that a 5Dmk3 is being released 6 months earlier as usual (Canon has usually a 3-year release cycles with their professional DSLRs).

Thank you for the great review and video, Nino. One question I have, and I may have simply missed your mention of it, what frame rate did you shoot the footage at. I saw you stated that there is a 1080p version on Youtube. Does this mean that you shot it at 30fps? Or was it lower?

Once again thank you. I cannot wait to get mine. A while longer for us here in Canada.
  • Nino Leitner plus 1 year ago
I shot at 1080p at 25fps - I'm in PAL country. Added that information to the description. For the slowmo, I used 720p 60fps and reconformed it to 25fps later.
  • Straightshot plus 1 year ago
Thanks Nino. I thought that you would have filmed the slow mo at 60fps originally and then brought the frame rate down in post. Again looks great. Thanks for your information.

Gorgeous! Two questions: where did you shoot this, and did you use any lighting equipment?
  • Nino Leitner plus 1 year ago
    Thank you, Walter!

I shot it in Vienna, Austria - at the ice skating range in front of City Hall, Inner City and a refinery close to the airport outside the city.

No lighting equipment whatsoever was used in shooting this, only a fast zoom lens.

    thanks nino.
I read the owner manual of the 550d and noticed that there is a function( in photo) to increase easily the "bookeh" or the shallow deep of field.
Could you tell me if this setting still work in video mode?
Generaly which settings photos are opened in video mode?
    Thanks
  • Nino Leitner plus 1 year ago
Really? Please tell me the page of the manual you found this on, I'll check it out.
  •
  • i like this test, is a nice composition with the slow-mo. I have notice some grain there but is not annoying for me. i think that could be a iso problem, compression or a lens speed. i will go to your blog a while and read about it. good work again.
  • Nino Leitner plus 1 year ago
Thanks Elena! The grain is mostly due to the high ISO (1600) and maybe compression I think. It is especially noticeable at the end, because I shot these in really thick fog, and that seems to be a problem for the compression/ISO.

did you experience any issues with overheating? it did look cold where you filmed your shots though..
  • Nino Leitner plus 1 year ago
I did! Actually not when I shot this, but I shot something last week which I'm going to edit soon, and the camera overheated when I shot several longer clips in a row (say, 15-20 minutes in all). Turned it off, waited for a few minutes and turned it back on again and could continue shooting right away again.

Didn't have the issue with this film, but as you said, could have been because it was all outdoors and it was cold anyway!
  •
  • Incredible my man !

The whole thing is great. Shot selection, music comp, picture editing... all very good !

    2 Questions

You said you didn't shoot this in 60p(slow mo). I'm very curious as to why you didn't shoot it in 60p and decided to convert in post.

    and

You say you used cinema tools in final cut ? is this a plug in that you're talking about?

    Again, amazing work sir !!
  • Nino Leitner plus 1 year ago
Sorry for my late answer, overlooked this comment.

Where did I say I didn't shoot in 60fps? I did, and that's how the slow motion was shot.

Cinema Tools is a separate programme that comes with the Final Cut Studio suite of applications. It's installed in the Applications folder as well.

Where did you buy the 18-135 kit?

  • Nino Leitner plus 1 year ago
It's the kit lens ... so it comes with the camera by definition :-)
Not sure you can buy it separately, anyway ... DON'T! Save some money and get a better lens, it's not worth it.

    Hi Nino,

I just bought with the 18-55 lens kit. I Didn't find the 18-135mm kit.
I have also a 50mm 1.8 II and some old olympus OM lens (E.Zuiko).. as 35, 50 and 135 prime lens.

    Thank you very much!!

  • Mark Mangan 1 year ago
Hi Nino, you said "El Holandes, you can shoot at 60fps even if you're working in PAL as I am, because then you even have "slower slow-motion". But don't forget to double the shutter speed to 1/125, otherwise you won't have "cinematic motion".
I used a couple of 60fps shots slowed down to 25fps for my short February". Can you explain what you mean by this? I'd really like to know how the frame rate and shutter speed effect each other like that and make 'extra' slow motion possible with a smooth appearance.

I'm a FCP editor too, but I use the time remap section for speed adjustments, what does Cinema Tools offer that isn't available in FCP? I've never actually needed to use Cinema Tools for anything.

    Thanks,

    Mark
  • Nino Leitner plus 1 year ago
You need Cinema Tools to reconform 60fps footage to 25fps or 24fps, thereby creating slow motion.

Doubling the shutter speed compared to the framerate is a rule of thumb that is necessary to achieve "cinematic motion". Anything other than this will create "ghost images" or jittery motion. Any video camcorder adjusts this automatically, but DSLRs being essentially stills cameras, you have to do it manually.
  •
  • Jesse Berger 1 year ago
yeah, it looks good but its not really a film in my opinion. No conflict or resolution... not much keeping me watching. Nice cinematography though.
  • Nino Leitner plus 1 year ago
A short film is just what it says: a film which is short. That says nothing about any conflict or resolution. I could film a dog pooping on the street, post it on the internet and it would still be a short film. You think of a short film as only being a drama perhaps, but that is only one genre - an experimentation piece like this one is still a short film.

  • Matt Reamer 1 year ago
I just got a T2i and I don't know how to get smooth slow-mo footage. How would I do this?
  • Nino Leitner plus 1 year ago
You need to shoot in either 720p50 or 720p60 and reconform the footage using Apple CinemaTools (part of Final Cut Studio) or other tools on Windows. Search Philip Bloom's blog for a tutorial video.
  •
  • Matt Reamer 1 year ago
Shit, I only have final cut express, is there any other way to do it?
  • Brolin Russell 1 year ago
It took me about three weeks to find this. I wanted to know the same thing. But yes there is a way to do a real conversion from 60fps to 30fps. Download a program called JES Deinterlacer. You can get is from Apples' site or from xs4all.nl/~jeschot/home.html
What you have to do is input your file, and then under the 'Project' tab first click "1280x720 60p", then click Custom, then on the right change the frame rate to 30, and change the speed to "0.5". And when i output the video i use "direct" and "apple intermidiate codec". Hopefully this works for you and anyone else wondering the same thing.

Nice shot mate. I am getting my hands on the 550d but there is one thing I cannot reproduce from what you do: the quick manual focus.
How do you manage to focus perfectly from the first trial on the man with a scarf (2'25 n the video)? I would love to master this, moving from one focus to another, quickly and accurately.

    Thanks.
    Matt

    Thanks Matt!

Well, it really all comes down to practice. Just, try, try, try, and you will learn quickly! Have you used the 70-200mm, which I used mostly for this film? It's not easy, but as you can see, manageable to focus.
