This short film, FEBRUARY, was shot on a pre-production unit of the new Canon EOS 550D / Rebel T2i. This is UNGRADED footage straight off the camera (converted to ProRes LT first for easy editing). I used a "flattened" picture style as outlined by Stu Maschwitz on his blog: prolost.com/blog/2009/8/3/flatten-your-5d.html
Shot in 1080p with 25fps, except for the slow-motion, which was shot in 720p with 60fps and later reconformed to 25fps.
EDIT:
I updated the blog with a rolling shutter test and a short raw footage clip (straight off the camera) for download.

Great footage.
Thank you
Thank you anyhow.
Regards
Daniel
Probably the best footage I have seen so far. We would love to see that short asap!
I think the grain is mostly tolerable in the shots above, only at the end - the foggy shots of the refinery and the headlights of the cars going by - it gets quite nasty. But that is due to the fog, the compression doesn't see to be able to cope with it properly. Also, you can notice some horizontal lines going through the image, which shows the CMOS sensor's structure. Also not very pleasing.
Great footage! I can't wait to see the final video. Do you think you could post some footage with the kit lens? I think the footage you've shown so far has persuaded me to buy this baby!
what is your opinion about the KIT-Lens for normal usage.
Is the 550D too new that FCP won't recognize it? Supposedly there is a FCP plug-in coming in March? Are you using FCP? If so, how are you setting it up to capture the footage from the 550D, anything special?
Thanks!
Philip Bloom has a detailed post on the workflow:
philipbloom.co.uk/2009/09/01/my-latest-5dmkii-workflow/
What are you doing to make sure you are getting good exposure?
Also very interesting the fact you didn't grade it, but used a specific pictures style instead.
-How much did you see the rolling shutter "issue" on this new camera, compared to 5D2 and 7D?
It's great to see that Canon release an entry-level with such quality.
Sorry to mention this, but we must not forget that a whole community is still waiting for the same features on the 5D Mark II since lot of months...
To those 5D Mark II users, I recommend to check:
5dmark2.wordpress.com
Those guys have been working very hard since early 2009, first to get the "Full manual control", and then to get the "standard frame rates" and other improvements (now just like the 550D which is a $800 entry-level, compared to the $2,500 5D2)
I'm a 5D2 user too, and I really hope Canon take MORE care of all of us who invested a several thousands in Canon, and still keep buying expensive FF lenses.
Thanks a lot for posting this video, and congrats for the great work
The video is great and I like your work – beautiful. And thanks for the “flattened” picture style hint!

I assume they must have some sort of problem with updating the firmware of the 5Dmk2 to support all the frame rates of the 7D and 550D. It should have been published ages ago. Don't forget: the 5Dmk2 was the first DSLR to shoot 1080p, and it is now 1.5 years old already. There might be technical limitations.
It's already rumored that a 5Dmk3 is being released 6 months earlier as usual (Canon has usually a 3-year release cycles with their professional DSLRs).
by the way, what is the name of that music you put ? it's from a movie, but i can't remember which one
Johnnie
Once again thank you. I cannot wait to get mine. A while longer for us here in Canada.
I shot it in Vienna, Austria - at the ice skating range in front of City Hall, Inner City and a refinery close to the airport outside the city.
No lighting equipment whatsoever was used in shooting this, only a fast zoom lens.
I read the owner manual of the 550d and noticed that there is a function( in photo) to increase easily the "bookeh" or the shallow deep of field.
Could you tell me if this setting still work in video mode?
Generaly which settings photos are opened in video mode?
Thanks
Looked at it - forget this function, seems just like the amateur way of changing the aperture.
Didn't have the issue with this film, but as you said, could have been because it was all outdoors and it was cold anyway!
The whole thing is great. Shot selection, music comp, picture editing... all very good !
2 Questions
You said you didn't shoot this in 60p(slow mo). I'm very curious as to why you didn't shoot it in 60p and decided to convert in post.
and
You say you used cinema tools in final cut ? is this a plug in that you're talking about?
Again, amazing work sir !!
Where did I say I didn't shoot in 60fps? I did, and that's how the slow motion was shot.
Cinema Tools is a separate programme that comes with the Final Cut Studio suite of applications. It's installed in the Applications folder as well.
Really nice work!
Which lenses did you use for this short?
I'm ordering my t2i for video recording this week.
THanks in advance! :)
Where did you buy the 18-135 kit?
I just can't find it anymore.
Thanks and congratulations!
Not sure you can buy it separately, anyway ... DON'T! Save some money and get a better lens, it's not worth it.
I just bought with the 18-55 lens kit. I Didn't find the 18-135mm kit.
I have also a 50mm 1.8 II and some old olympus OM lens (E.Zuiko).. as 35, 50 and 135 prime lens.
Thank you very much!!
I used a couple of 60fps shots slowed down to 25fps for my short February". Can you explain what you mean by this? I'd really like to know how the frame rate and shutter speed effect each other like that and make 'extra' slow motion possible with a smooth appearance.
I'm a FCP editor too, but I use the time remap section for speed adjustments, what does Cinema Tools offer that isn't available in FCP? I've never actually needed to use Cinema Tools for anything.
Thanks,
Mark
Doubling the shutter speed compared to the framerate is a rule of thumb that is necessary to achieve "cinematic motion". Anything other than this will create "ghost images" or jittery motion. Any video camcorder adjusts this automatically, but DSLRs being essentially stills cameras, you have to do it manually.
What you have to do is input your file, and then under the 'Project' tab first click "1280x720 60p", then click Custom, then on the right change the frame rate to 30, and change the speed to "0.5". And when i output the video i use "direct" and "apple intermidiate codec". Hopefully this works for you and anyone else wondering the same thing.
Cheers. Pier Giorgio Provenzano
Thanks, Fabulous video
How do you manage to focus perfectly from the first trial on the man with a scarf (2'25 n the video)? I would love to master this, moving from one focus to another, quickly and accurately.
Thanks.
Matt
Well, it really all comes down to practice. Just, try, try, try, and you will learn quickly! Have you used the 70-200mm, which I used mostly for this film? It's not easy, but as you can see, manageable to focus.
