Canon EOS 7D vs Rebel T2i (550D) review and comparison video

Please vimeo.com/channels/jjdslr for more DSLR related videos.

Blog post with details at orangevp.blogspot.com/

Please watch in Full Screen if you can.

Last shots of myself filming, WB setting was different.
It's different NOT due to difference of camera, but my mistake of setting different WB for each cams. Sorry!

Follow me at twitter.com/jj_orange for updates!

*updates: T2i does have picture style preset. 3 of them.
Focus ring, I got it from Cinevate. check out my HDSLR setup video for more info. Thank you all so much for watching!

**updates: (viaDSLRinformer): 550D/ T2i HDMI output switches res from 1080 to 480 like 5DmkII when you start to record, not great at all for external monitors. watch this test that I did vimeo.com/10492267

    Great Job..!!

  • JoyGraphy plus 1 year ago

zacuto z-finder..

  • JoyGraphy plus 1 year ago

  • Sean Lee 1 year ago
  • JoyGraphy plus 1 year ago

Thanks so much for the video! God bless.
  • KD 1 year ago
Cool! :) Let me know.

and wow... 5D is a new beast now!!

    Thanks for posting. Two questions.
1-Can you monitor live through HDMI at 1080 same as 7D?
2-Does the T2i have less jello?

I appears as if it exhibits less jello than 7D in you pan tests.
    Thanks again.
  • I haven't had a chance with HDMI cable yet, but av out works fine, but remember that it shows either on ex monitor or LCD, not both at the same time.
  • Seiishu 1 year ago
No it does not have less rolling shutter effect. It is just that movements he did with T2i were not as erratic as he did with 7D. Plus, I never experienced any of it with my 7D when I shot at (HD) 1280x720.
Rolling shutter effect is slightly visible only in full HD (1920x1080) and I've noticed not all 7Ds shows same amount of jello effect.
  • shian 1 year ago
they both use the same sensor sizes... the jello-cam effect should be more or less the same. it's highly subjective unless we have a motorized pan rig and do a frame by fame overlay.

i do not think it varies with individual cameras, the CMOS reading rate should be the same for each and every camera.

AFAIK, if you get jello cam is more dependent on the lenses you use (wide is more forgiving) and how drastic of a movement you make, as well as what you are filming... it is more apparent in shots where you have more vertical lines. Just be aware of your camera's limitations and you should be fine :)

The 5Dmk2 suffers most from this I suspect, due it is nice, large full frame sensor.
  • Nopz, not as the same om external monitor. 7D has a good 1080 output when live recording with external monitor. but the 550D drops down 480p when start recording. plays back in full res on external monitor. same prob with 5D.

Thanks for taking the time to make the video. The T2i looks wimpy next to the 7d... but I still want one!
  • I know. That's why I'm keeping my 7D. It does feel too light for me.
  • shian 1 year ago
550D is basically Cannon using 7D-tech stripped down a to a entry-level body. If you already have a 7D and switch to a 550D you'll feel the different.

Good to note that both cameras are meant for different markets, the 550D offers 7Dish quality to the entry-level market, possibly a move by Canon to have a good hold on that given many other cameras like mirrorless systems and micro four thirds are starting to eat into that.

Personally I think it's an awesome camera, just know it's limitations. It has given me footages better then some professional videocams that I have used! Shot some of the best stuff on it :)

damn I couldnt even tell the difference
  • Right? I was surprised myself.
  • Jay Newfarm 1 year ago
I think I spotted a difference in the rolling shutter effect, when you panned left and right. It may be because I was looking for it, knowing that the 7D can read twice as fast from the sensor than the 550D... :-)
  • Robert Rozendale 4 months ago
Yes but if the sensor scanning rate is the same it doesn't make a difference.

Thanks so much. I am selling a whole bunch of my stuff to buy this cam. Does the autofocus make much sound? I shoot lots of casual no setup, spontaneous stuff.
  • Auto focus on dslr is discouraged. I wouldn't depend on auto focus like video cameras.

  • Thanks! I wish I had time to shoot more interesting stuff. Soon....

I see that you have more vids already.
I meant to say before that the one thing that confused me in this, I should have noted, was the last 2 shots with the color balance.
  • different WB setting. that was the reason. my bad!

    This is awesome. Thanks.

How does the T2i handle moire and aliasing? I didn't see much in your demos.
  • I gotta test more about moire and aliasing this weekend. I am thinking about going somewhere dark, then use flash off each other to test out. stay tuned.

    Brilliant thanks!

Where did you get the focussing bit that fits round the 28mm lens?

thx for posting this, i know its too soon to say but with the time you've had would u say for a camera for the next 4-5yrs go with t2i or 7d (stills and video) for the big difference in price u think its worth going 7d
  • I am not 100% sure, but I have a feeling that 7D will survive stronger than T2i, simply based on built quality. But I haven't used either camera longer than 5 months, so too early to tell.
  • Mike R 1 year ago
thats the same feeling i got... i just dont know anymore canons bringing out these cameras like hot cakes investing now and a new camera will be out in a few months want something that will be supported and updated
  •
  • Excellent video comparison. Bravo. I was shocked at how similar the video from the two cameras was. The T2i seems to have somewhat poorer low light, but not by a lot really. Thanks again for posting this. I might have to pick one of these up.
  • Thank you, Travis. I think they are very similar on low light. Not too noticeable. I am going to try out some more low light situation this weekend at home.
  • Cool. I'll stay tuned. d;-)

At 15:51 in the T2i's menu there is a "AF During" option. Is that option present on the 7D ?
  • I don't think there is such option on 7D. I know it's not usable during manual setting anyway. I have to double check the manual book, then get back to you.
  • Gab Labelle plus 1 year ago
    Did you check !? ;-)

I think everyone who waits for 550D owes a gratitude to you. Very kindly considered and informative video. If we ignore the technical detail obsessed users, apparently the only difference of 550D from 7D is it's weight!
  • Thank you so much. I wish I had more time and I was feeling better, so I could go out and shoot more exciting stuff. They are barely different in image quality. Only built quality is different.

Just what I was waiting for... thanks.
Do you have an opinion on rolling shutter between the two?
    Cheers
  • Rolling shutter wasn't too bad on either of them. Some people saw that T2i handeled better than 7D on my footage, but maybe I shook T2i little easy, since it's newer member to my family, LOL!
  • Shao Zhang 1 year ago
If you really want to test this properly, just mount both cameras together and pan them. You can use a flash hot shoe 1/4" adapter to mount the T2i on top of the 7D. Make sure their FOV is exactly the same or use the same lens if you have two. Grab 2 frames and compare!
  • Heath Cozens plus 1 year ago
Definitely. Even just gaffer the things together! This is a pretty crucial difference... would love to see the results.
  •
  • John Lewis plus 1 year ago
from the test footage you've shot, it looks as though the 550D/T2i might even have 'slightly' less jello/skew than the 7D... certainly not more.

    woohoo!
  • Seiishu 1 year ago
Don't think so. It is clearly visible that movements he did with T2i were not as erratic as those he did with 7D. Plus when shooting at 1280x720, at least on my camera, rolling shutter effect does not exist. Only in 1920x1080.

He needs to do more precise test so we can actually see the difference, if there is any.

The only question left remain for me is - can the t2i output 1080i during recording like the 7D or only 576i / 480i like the 5D II?

If you can check this i would very happy.

    Thanks
    Daniel
  • It has HDMI output, so I would assume yes, but I personally do not own HDMI monitor, so we gotta wait for someone else to test for that.
  • 7D has a good 1080 output when live recording with external monitor. but the 550D drops down 480p when start recording. plays back in full res on external monitor. same prob with 5D.

  • Many thanks for such a fast review, it was very informative for me.

You said, that you had bad experience with kit lenses, you ment EF-S 18-135mm IS? If you have a time, maybe you can suggest something similar (lense) in same price range and good enough quality for still images and video capture?
  • I am not sure it's anything in that price range would be good enough. I used 28mm 1.8 prime lens, but used 24-70 L lens a lot more than 28mm because of zoom function and quality as well. I am picking up EF-S17-55mm IS lens later next week..
  • JJ, I actually sold my 24-70 in order to get the EFS 17-55. You will love the stabilization...much lighter too :) Loved the 24-70, but you need a dslr rig (cinevate uno, zacuto etc.) to use it...you can get by handheld with the 17-55 IS
  • I am adding EF-S 17-55mm for T2i. I am keeping 24-70mm for 7D, though. My friend uses 17-55 and he told it's a very good lens, so. Thank you!

Very nice test and introduction video. I think the T2i is going to be a great camera for indie guys like me. I also think that all you 7D owners who were upset about the T2i price and features, should relax because the 7D appears to me to be several steps ahead of the t2i. Most notably the manual kelvin settings.
  • Thank you. I totally agree with you. I was upset briefly when I heard about T2i, but after I used it a bit, 7D has good reason to be more expensive than T2i.

what is the lens gear you use? where do you get them? great vid! thanks!
  • it's follow focus ring. the one that I put on 28mm is newer version, where 24-70mm is older version.
    They are both from cinevate.com
  • Thanks for info. Interested in that. That Follow Focus Gear Ring with blue edge from inside is Cinevate to? Cose I cant find this model in their main page.

    Only this one:

Excellent comparison, I really appreciate it!!

I actually prefer the lighter weight and smaller size, but I'm concerned about the T2i's weather sealing... not sure it would be able to hold up to -30c and snow :(
  • wow. -30c? I Don't know about that.. not with T2i.. I have seen video with 7D in rain and snow, and it was fine... not 100% sure if I would do the same to T2i..
Thank you so much for watching!

I enjoyed your comparison. Really great work.
The 7D is still the better fit, due to the weather proof body, the heavier weight, the better placement of the buttons and the extra processor. When you look at the HD Video, that both provide very well, they look very very similar, almost identical I'd say.

I'm a beginning student and almost sure the 550D will be the perfect match for me now.

    Thanks again.
  • Thanks a lot, Nico.
I am happy to see many people find it helpful by watching my video. for recent graduates like yourself, this camera may help you a lot to get into HDSLR world. But don't give up on 7D, though. Totally worth extra money.
Good luck with your adventure, Nico!
  •
  • Gary P 1 year ago
I'm not sure why everyone is comparing this cam to 7D? They are both the same sensor chip...so it would be the same output for both. Yes, weather proofing would be a issue if you are shooting in high or low temps. 7D is a better build camera but the guts of it are in the T2i. I'm guessing certain functions are not going to be the same but I think you'll be able to work around it. Gees...its only $800 bucks. You guys want a 5k camera for $800...its not going to happen.
  • Luis Palha 1 year ago
It is NOT the same sensor . It's similar in size but not the same. Please see postings on Canon.com
