This teaser's title reflects a move from photography (flickr.com/photos/kymfielke) to video due to the Canon 7D I upgraded to late '09. Not my first foray into film (The Airborne Expedition: vimeo.com/7585192), but this is a solo project. This is a quick teaser of production footage for a South Australian paragliding short film in the works. The project has become bigger than first envisaged so I'm not pushing a finish-by date, but aiming for a finish sometime in '11.

Camera: Canon 7D
Lenses: Canon EF-S 10-22mm & 17-85mm
Edited in Adobe Premiere Pro CS5

Music: 'Efface' by Silence, from the album L'autre endroit. Available at jamendo.com/en/album/830

This is a call-out to any musicians who may be interested in having their tracks feature in the planned short. Electronica works are preferred, but other genre submissions such as hip-hop, funk, world and classical are also welcome. Please contact me via Vimeo messaging.

    Great teaser !
Which rectilinear wide angle lens is used at 00:12 ? It looks so wide and so rectilinear that I thought it might be software based...

Thanks Pierre. The Canon EF-S 10-22mm is the main lens I fly with. Wide angle helps prevent shaky footage when getting moved around in the harness - even coastal air is not as smooth as you think.

I'm flying with an 8 mm peleng fisheye but I'm tired of its distortion I was looking at the tokina 11-16 because it as a fixed aperture of 2.8 which is better for video. However there seem to be a real gap in angle between 10 and 11 mm...
I'm sure than coastal air is much smoother than the air we had here for the last 3 months: not even one flight since January...

The Tokina 11-16mm is getting raved about for film work on cameras such as the 7D, so go ahead and get it and let us know what you think. The 10-22mm was in my stills kit already.

Awesome! That must be unreal flying above the coast like that. The first cloud timelapse is wicked. The shot on the hill near the end, is that the spot?

Look forward to seeing the finished piece.

Nope, it's the clip of my shadow just over the back of a mates wing below, about 1km to the west of the car park. BTW, flew over a smelly dead whale near 'the' head to the east years ago. Got photos :-)

Looking forward to the real deal.
  • Kym Fielke plus 1 year ago
The real deal is a LOT of hard work away yet Matt as it's a solo project. But, will try not to let you down ;-)

I'm about to buy the Tokina 11-16 but I'd like to be sure that it is wide enough to stabilize airborne paragliding takes...
I guess I have to be the one that will answer this question.

Creates a great atmosphere with the music and black fade combination - sort of almost expecting a voice over......'Coming soon from Director Michael Bay..." lol! Very nice.

nice work Kym, keep up to hard, long, time/life consuming work...especially cause i wanna see myself flying around some more in it!!
  • Kym Fielke plus 1 year ago
You funny bugger Mr Earl. Oh don't you worry, you'll be in it for sure. But I REALLY need more footage of you guys doing grounded antics however you're all too friggin camera shy!! If I paid you all with beer to 'act' would that help loosen you guys up?

Sure beer would be an excellent form of payment! Seriously tho if you need footage then I'd be happy to be a focal point!

really nice video! I just bought 550D hoping to create something like your videos :)
  • Kym Fielke plus 1 year ago
Thanks Bitlas, but you already create great vids!

Enjoy the 550D - if you've never owned a DSLR for aerial work before you'll find it... interesting :-). Feel free to ask any questions regarding settings, lenses, etc (shoot a message via Vimeo Messaging). The best advice is from the very start make sure you use a neutral setting and pull the contrast and sharpening all the way down to the left and pull saturation down 2 notches. You'll get 2 more stops of latitude to play with in post.

DSLR is totally new word to me. I am starting from 0 experience, but I am hoping to learn shooting good videos in the new seazon :) I will bombard you with many questions soon :))

    Great job... really nice video!
Did you film it in 720 / 25fps ore more?
Happy new year... and I wish you a lot of flights in 2011!
    Hugo, from France
  • Kym Fielke plus 1 year ago
Hi Hugo and a Happy New Year to you also.

I mostly film in 1080/25fps as I edit all my films in 25fps timelines for that nice 'film look', but sometimes shoot at 720/50fps to get super smooth slow motion footage (i.e. at exactly half speed).

Thanks Mike. Silver Lining distracted me a bit too much during 2010... :-)

    sublime vidéo......superbes couleurs.....musique bien adaptée......que du bonheur......but too short !!!!!
  • Kym Fielke plus 9 months ago
Thank you polodu. But this was just a short teaser I posted over 1 year ago. I'm still working towards a major local film this year as promised by this teaser but have had too many distractions with other short films along the way :-)
