A video I shot around Vancouver, Canada. The music is "give it up" by 8mm. Shot on a Sony V1U. Graded using Magic Bullet Looks.

Perambulate - walk or travel through or around for pleasure and in a leisurely way.

I like your style man. Are you a fan of Kubrick? I've seen your other videos and would really recommend watching a movie called Baraka (not by Kubrick though), it would inspire you beyond anything you can imagine. But it has to be seen on a big tv with a good sound system.

Baraka is my favorite movie of all time! Incredible visuals from all over the world!
  •
  • Wonderful. I love Baraka too..I love Canada. I love this video. I love vancouver. thanks for this man.

    Love the smoke mushrooms.
  • Jon Rawlinson 3 months ago
haha! Its actually milk in water! I rotated the image 180 so the milk is going up.

I have once used methyleen powder to create this kind of effect back in 2003...
Because it is a powder, it wil resolve very slowly and will only sink to bottom of jar when it starts to resolve, resulting in a very special effect. (I shot it with a very old sony minidv cam)
You really should experiment with it ;)
You can see the effect in this video near the end... (Vimeo still converting)

    Very cool!

    What is methyleen powder?

Thanks for sharing how you did the 'smoke'. I really did think it was smoke not milk. Very cool.

Wow, good work. How much time did it take to shoot all of this?
Looks good! (an EX1 would be great for you, software slowmotion will never be real slowmotion)
  • Jon Rawlinson 3 months ago
Ya definitely. I'm holding out for the EX3! I shot this in about 6 hours - its mostly just wandering around the city for a day and shooting whatever looks interesting.

Yeah Van City. Hey Jon you got any projects (films/shorts) in your future plans?

beautiful shots. style. sony hvr-v1u, right? i was thinking i'd get a canon xh-a1 until the scarlet ships, but the v1u is an option, too. i shot love addiction on the z1u and the low light performance was excellent- how is it on the v1u? that's the only thing that concerns me.

the grading was superb, loved it. Some nice footage too.

Wanted to ask how you got the smoke shots. Been trying to do something similar for a video I am working on. Any thoughts or recommendations on pyro stuff or ingredients for smoke type effects?

    cheers
  • Jon Rawlinson 3 months ago
Thanks! Its actually not smoke. Its milk in water! I poured the milk into a clear jug filled with water. Then I simply flipped the video 180. The key is to have a solid dark background.

brilliant, just like the old cloud tanks from pre-digital practical effects days. Milk, genius. Will look into that.

    Thanks for the tip

Nice work man! I was organizing bookmarks the other day and I came across scourist.com and realized I've been watching your work for longer than I realized. Now you're on vimeo and I'm definitely a fan!
  • Jon Rawlinson 3 months ago
    Thanks so much!

Sadly scourist died a couple years back. Thanks for watching!

It's great work indeed: the editing, the clips, the processing, etc. but the overall effect of the movie is to leave me depressed. It's a very sad video.
  • Jon Rawlinson 2 months ago
Thanks for the comment! Ya I think its the song that makes it feel sad.

Brilliant work. This must be your best film on here. Bookending your shots with the milk fx shots gives the film a really organic, and kind of cool, feel.
  • Jon Rawlinson 2 months ago
Thanks! The milk was the most fun to shoot!
