The beginning of my career and infatuation with all things fast - this one, not so fast. A Sears Briggs & Stratton belt drive go-kart. We squeezed as much horsepower as we could out of it and in about a month got bored and moved on to something a bit faster - I'll post that later.
After you're done laughing, remember, this was over 57 years ago, I wasn't quite 7 years old, and I had to sit on a phone book just to drive the thing - but I was hooked!
A little more trivia: I lived across the street from this parking lot on Zelzah Avenue, Reseda, CA. It was a Board of Education by day and became our race track on the weekends - a great place to grow-up. As we evolved into competitive karts we had some serious match races on that little oval, as well as many mini bike races around those buildings. After this video was shot we saved up enough money to buy our first helmet - no looking back after that.
