Alumni Ambassador Rebecca Littman-Smith discusses her Fulbright experience completing an Fulbright architecture grant in Finland.

Current City: Portland, Oregon
University of Oregon
Fulbright U.S. Student in Architecture – Finland, 2010-2011

In Finland, Rebecca conducted research on the use of wood as a primary building material in Finnish Architecture. Rebecca sought to understand how timber has traditionally defined the image of Finland, both in nature and in the built environment. During her time in Helsinki, she was affiliated with Aalto University's Department of Architecture, and participated in the Wood Program. With her colleagues in the Wood Program, she designed and built a finished, full scale wooden transitional shelter: ‘Liina.’ This experimental shelter employed modern Finnish building techniques to address the need for refugee transitional housing as global disaster response becomes more common. Rebecca currently works for an architecture office in Portland, Oregon.
