California voters were split Tuesday on whether to break away and form a 51st state. Residents in Del Norte County voted down 41 to 59 percent a measure seeking a "declaration of support" for separation, while Tehama County residents approved it 56 to 44 percent. The issue of whether the northern portion of California and the southern section of Oregon should form their own state called Jefferson stretches back to the 1940s, and recently regained traction.
