17. Bicycling in traffic is a dance you lead

Video companion to "Smart Moves: You Lead the Dance"

The epiphany which transforms us into confident cyclists is grasping the simple (albeit counter-intuitive) fact that we have control of our environment. That control comes from predictability, communication and (believe it or not) self-image.

This is a very informative video..I plan on sending others here to view it. It is scary to start riding in traffic and to learn how to take control of the lanes, you brought this out in a way that will help others...Cheers.

Control YOUR space? What about get out of the way of the bigger, faster vehicles with engines? Nicely shot video though.

The space each road user occupies on the road is that person's space, no matter what vehicle they are driving on the PUBLIC roadway. The rule of the road is first come/first served. It has been since before the auto. There is no right of speed.

    Minimum Speed Law

22400. (a) No person shall drive upon a highway at such a slow speed as to impede or block the normal and reasonable movement of traffic, unless the reduced speed is necessary for safe operation, because of a grade, or in compliance with law.

In Florida that law has the word MOTOR in front of vehicle.

    Florida Law 316.2065 Bicycle regulations.
(5)(a) Any person operating a bicycle upon a roadway at less than the normal speed of traffic at the time and place and under the conditions then existing shall ride as close as practicable to the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway.

Just in case I missed it, perhaps you could point out where in this law (or the exceptions) where it's legal to obstruct traffic by riding a bicycle in the middle of a lane.

Read the whole law Viktor. It has 3 paragraphs of exceptions. Every single scene in this video is 100% within the law.
