Synopsis:
The video reflects the artist's personal experience with international identity, the confusion of language, the interaction between inner and outer environment, and the curiosity of self-discovering. Abstract and poetic imagery is generated in an instinctive way. The question is addressed, the answer is open. Comprehension is secondary to imagination.

Biography:
Xiaowen Zhu is a media artist from Shanghai, China and has been studying and working in Germany and USA in recent years. She is a visual poet, social critic and aesthetic researcher. Her primary media are documentary film, experimental video and video installation. It is part of her research process to experiment with different means of visual communication in order to create an open, dynamic, global and yet intimate conversation.

Xiaowen Zhu received her BA in Film, TV Production and Media Arts from Tongji University, China in 2008. Currently she is an MFA candidate major in Art Video in Syracuse University, USA. During her undergraduate study, she attended an exchange program in Academy of Art and Design Offenbach in Germany.

Her works have been showed in Strozzina Art Space (Florence,Italy), Sainsbury Center for Visual Arts (Norwich, UK), Museum of Contemporary Photography (Chicago, USA), Everson Museum of Art (Syracuse, USA), Shanghai eArts Festival(Shanghai, China), Toronto Urban Film Festival (Toronto, Canada), DOK Munich (Munich, Germany), V2_Institute for the Unstable Media (Rotterdam, the Netherlands), Stuttgart Filmwinter (Stuttgart, Germany), Athens Video Art Festival (Athens, Greece) and etc.

Filmography:
2010 The Cost of A Better Life, single-channel video installation. The experimental video appropriates a documentary video of a castration surgery of a male cat and a Chinese propaganda song composed in 1950s. 'Better Life' is a quotation of the slogan of Shanghai Expo 2010 “Better City, Better Life”. The video asks a question about what people are losing when they are guided by the society to pursue a better life.

2010 Cooked Snow, single-channel experimental video. 2010 Carousel Travel, the one-minute documentary "lm presents the character of an “international traveler” with visual collage and personal narration. It raises question about the loss of personal identity in a global environment and expresses a sense of loneliness in the
process of radical urbanization.

2009 Garden, If Not Too Far, this video is a natural meditation that re$ects the relation between human perception and the objective existence in the universe. It is a poetry of time and a sketch of the most subtle turbulence in subjective feelings. The appearance of nature is
symbolic. The tangibleness is a metaphor of enlightenment.

2008 40+4 Art is not enough! Not enough! , multimedia installation-an interview project with forty Shanghai-based artists, reflecting their views on the contemporary art scene in China

2008 Baby’s World, documentary, 60 minutes-the life of a blind girl and her family in Shanghai, who is a victim of medical accident when she was born
