Bad:
- I still didnt zoom in enough on the focus screen. But, I kind of like the effect.
-Too much noise- was not shooting correctly...I was in cinemode at 3.something aperture on the camera.
-Still not setup with rails on this video (they came in today!!!!! may 7th)

Good:
- I think the shots are real sharp.
- No gain (I think) on the indoor shots
- Crane tripod tip via Eugenia's blog
- 28mm lens is AMAZING.

What do you think?

Notes:

I crunched the blacks/shadows too much- but it is a dark song :) and the sun was almost set. Please- all criticism/suggestions/feedback WELCOME!

There is a lot of light loss with the adapter. All the dark areas are completely black. The crane shots are nice!
  • Benjamin Reece 2 years ago
Eugenia- thanks for commenting! you are a legend! :)

Why do you think I am having all this light loss- I can tell you the lens is HIGHLY rated. Possibilities: 1. I can tell you- I am still not zooming in enough on my ground glass. 2. I am flatting the shadows using CC- 3. I am still trying to grasp the basic concepts of zero gain shooting on the HV20.

Please add your two cents :).

PS- I learned the crane shots from your blog. (its actually just the tripod! :)
  • Eugenia Loli-Queru plus 2 years ago
Thanks Ben. I think that maybe you want to expose a bit more if you are using an adapter... :)
  • Benjamin Reece 2 years ago
Yea, I actually just read your comment- I believe you were NOT referring to the focus screen vignetting- you were saying that I over flattened my blacks via color correction. Correct?

And by exposing, I probably should shoot 2.0 (or the lowest) aperture on the HV20 and 2.0 on the lens. As well as 1/48th if in low light. Right? That gives me maximum exposure without gain (if I use the cell phone trick).
  • Eugenia Loli-Queru plus 2 years ago
Not sure if you flattened the blacks, or the adapter doesn't let much light in.

As for the exposure, the worst thing you can do is to use the cellphone trick. That "trick" simply UNDER exposes, it doesn't help you in your situation. What you need to do is either open the aperture more, or go to cinemode which has a higher dynamic range and simply change the exposure compensation in manual mode.
  • Benjamin Reece 2 years ago
Gotcha- thanks for one on one tips- HV20 boards can be overwhelming and confusing. We need a Wiki to let the community "experts" have more influence. I hate this average output collective model we have right now :) haha.

I am also thinking about just covering the lens with a cap, then locking the exposure in cinemode- which gives you 2.0 1/48 on the camera. Is that a decent starting point for lower lit shots?
  • Benjamin Reece 2 years ago
And actually, I am watching this thing again- you are right, it is under exposed- even artistically speaking. Most of the shots are too dark to make out the detail. Should have made some clip independent color corrections, instead of applying the same exposure across all clips.
  • Eugenia Loli-Queru plus 2 years ago
The cap, is the same trick as the cellphone trick. That's not what you need to get more detail on the dark places. That has the OPPOSITE effect of what you need. You need to simply change exposure, the HV20 allows that when in manual mode. You activate the zebras, and then you make a best guess as to what exposure to use.
  • Benjamin Reece 2 years ago
So just start the camera up in cinemode- f2.0 on the lens- adjust whitebalance, etc, then manually adjust exposure with zebra turned on? Then I am good to go?

Now I'll have to research the zebra more...
  • Eugenia Loli-Queru plus 2 years ago
Yeah, make sure there is a bit of zebra left in the screen. It will make out for the light loss and color correction later. You can do some tests..

Nice. What adapter are you using? IMHO, I think it looks pretty good. I like the contrast. Detail is overrated.
  • Benjamin Reece 2 years ago
Bionicpix- Thanks man! It's the worley 35mm adapter 35mmadapter.co.uk.

Thanks for making me feel better about this one :)

Very nice shots, sharp focus, except for mabye the beginning, I think that hte fact that you could see the focusing screen gave it a music video feel, and added to this video in particular, but i know taht you knwo to zoom in more for a short film or whatever. Nice choice of music, coldplay is awesome. I liked it, good test. Can't wait to see your test with the shrigg rig.

What was the lens you used?

    I think I'm gonna be getting a hv30 and a 35mm adapter very soon.
  • Benjamin Reece 2 years ago
The lens is a Nikkor 28mm F2.0- a little expensive- but totally worth it- highly rated in the photographic community. Supposedly THE wide angle Nikon lens.

Dude, it will totally change your world :) get it. (the hv30 and 35mm)

I'm impressed. What crane tripod tip is that? it looks real good. To me, the contrast on the video is really good, very artsy looking! I like it a lot. I see your softbox there as well, what do you have in there, in term of power and color? cute kid!
  • Benjamin Reece 2 years ago
Thanks Vu! The crane is: eugenia.gnomefiles.org/2008/05/02/crane-like-shots-with-your-tripod/

    Just a tripod!

In regards to the contrast- thanks! I remember reading somewhere that film crushes the shadows- probably not near as much as this video though.

Soft box? Hmmm let me go see....400w each...although thats probably over rated as it is a cheapo brand (everlight?) I usually just set the white balance on tungsten - although I have fine tuned it with a grey card- I mostly use this for photography- bad idea right ? :)

Thanks! Her name is Josie...your kid is adorable as well.

Nice shot. Agree that it's underexposed, but it gives certain look, which is cool in that case, I believe.

By the way, why can't u measure the light with some meters and do exposure according to measured?
Otherwise you are just guessing with zebra, could be that in different scenes one has different colors of skin, for example...
Of course you have to know the light-losse of the adapter, but it's not a big deal I hope...

I'm trying to find out how to do it hv20.com/showthread.php?t=10798
    but still no suggestions...
  • Benjamin Reece 2 years ago
    Denis,

Thanks for the feedback! Yea, I need to get a light meter- you are totally right. I shoot photos too- so, it would be well justified. Also, I cant do zebra because I need the focus assist turned on.

Sizzled My Dizzle Man, Thank You. Was Reading Some Of These Comments. I have The Canon Hg10 And The LetusMini. I Find I Need Lenses With At least F1.4 Otherwise I get Lots Of Vignetting.
  • Benjamin Reece 2 years ago
ahaha- awesome- I guess...*confused* :). I am glad the comments helped you out.

1.4 is definitely wide open- the only lens for Nikon with manual control and 1.4- I believe is the 50mm- am I correct?
  •
  • Mark Simonson plus 2 years ago
Sorry for the confusion. Was thinking these adapters lose light so prime lenses work good. Yes, I believe the only lens 1.4 is the 50mm. I tried a 50mm 1.8 nikon lens and got bad results. How did the 2.0 28mm work for you? I am thinking of getting one. This is new to me so I am learning.
  • Benjamin Reece 2 years ago
Mark- I was actually wrong- they have a 85mm 1.4 (expensive, but awesome- not as flexible for video as the 28 though - and they have 35mm - again, I think the 50mm and 28mm setup I have is ideal).

I actually bought the 28mm 2.0- I LOVE it- Honestly, I probably wont be using the 50mm as much....I might need to goto the 50mm 1.4 or 1.2 because that would give me more of a reason to switch the lenses out :).

Bloody brilliant shots man. A bit underxposed, but it looks like you know that ;) But yea, wow, very nice. Are you using the twoneil adapter with the Nikon Nikkor 28mm?
Also, did you remove pulldown, and what are your export setting, cause it looks awesome!

Thanks alot, and once again great vid.

hey man, f*&king brilliant man to put it blunty, and its another kick in the teeth for film purists that you can get such a look using a HV30 consumer camera with a few add ons. Me and my team have a HV30 and a Sony HC9, and as I yet have had the chance to use film, I know now that I can achieve this look from both cameras.

But man you have to help me with 2 post questions, cause I know that alot of your questions have been hardware based, and I read you use FCP:

    1. The look.. are you converting your footage (not sure where you are from so presuming you are filming 1080 60i, Im from Oz so I converting 1080 50i) to 24p using Cinema Tools or Nattress G Film Conversion, or have you kept that at 29.97 or 25p. I have had no end of trouble trying to find information about converting to 24 or 23.98 progressive from people, as it much be a well kept secret, and you seem to be pretty helpful and enthusiatic haha, I would love some hints on how you did it.

    2. Did you colorgrade that using Magic Bullet or is that just the normal CC that comes with FCP, and the colors are just stunning because of the lens you use.

Thanks man, and you should be making music videos with your skill.. :)
  • Benjamin Reece 1 year ago
    Hey joel,

I didnt use FCP to color grade, I used cineform, and their built in grading....

I am filming at 1440 x 960 @ 24p, using the cineform intermediate codec., the hv20/30 allows for that.

I am trying to geti nto the music video thing, thanks sooo much. :)

Benjamin, I can tell how much you appreciate comments, so I signed up to leave you one.

I just got my HV20 a week or so ago and I love it. I'm turned away from 35mm adapters for two reasons:
Too many. Tons of people with HV20s get one to make it look "better." Not so much in my opinion.
And cause I've got a few GREAT Minolta/Sony lenses and there are no A-Mount adapters I don't think.

I have yet to shoot anything major or upload anything here, and this will probably be my only time taking time to comment someone else.

Being a Visual Effects artist and photographer I am CONSTANTLY thinking about how things were shot, how to do them, if it's a good composition, everything.

This little film didn't make me think of ANY of that. That's very rare.

The beginning was iffy, but I loved the rest of it. Such a cute little girl, a beautiful older girl, and you are very good looking as well =]

The way it shifts focus from the girl to you is plain beautiful. I liked the color correction you did, the only reason I didn't like the black is because it kinda crushed some detail I sometimes wanted to see in the girls.

Other than that. KEEP SHOOTING :D

This is some great stuff! I just got my DIY adapter in the mail and i using an 50mm f/1.8 on it and i was wondering how could i get my videos to look like yours. I am so confused and it shoots upside down so it makes it a bit difficult for my to film.

I really like how you always seem to get the right kind of music for each of your videos, they add to each other for sure.
