28mm F2.0 Montage- DIY Crane HV20
Bad:
- I still didnt zoom in enough on the focus screen. But, I kind of like the effect.
-Too much noise- was not shooting correctly...I was in cinemode at 3.something aperture on the camera.
-Still not setup with rails on this video (they came in today!!!!! may 7th)
Good:
- I think the shots are real sharp.
- No gain (I think) on the indoor shots
- Crane tripod tip via Eugenia's blog
- 28mm lens is AMAZING.
What do you think?
Notes:
I crunched the blacks/shadows too much- but it is a dark song :) and the sun was almost set. Please- all criticism/suggestions/feedback WELCOME!

Why do you think I am having all this light loss- I can tell you the lens is HIGHLY rated. Possibilities: 1. I can tell you- I am still not zooming in enough on my ground glass. 2. I am flatting the shadows using CC- 3. I am still trying to grasp the basic concepts of zero gain shooting on the HV20.
Please add your two cents :).
PS- I learned the crane shots from your blog. (its actually just the tripod! :)
And by exposing, I probably should shoot 2.0 (or the lowest) aperture on the HV20 and 2.0 on the lens. As well as 1/48th if in low light. Right? That gives me maximum exposure without gain (if I use the cell phone trick).
As for the exposure, the worst thing you can do is to use the cellphone trick. That "trick" simply UNDER exposes, it doesn't help you in your situation. What you need to do is either open the aperture more, or go to cinemode which has a higher dynamic range and simply change the exposure compensation in manual mode.
I am also thinking about just covering the lens with a cap, then locking the exposure in cinemode- which gives you 2.0 1/48 on the camera. Is that a decent starting point for lower lit shots?
Now I'll have to research the zebra more...
Thanks for making me feel better about this one :)
Thanks so much man- you can see some shots of the rig, and my review @ hv20.com/showthread.php?t=10852
I think I'm gonna be getting a hv30 and a 35mm adapter very soon.
Dude, it will totally change your world :) get it. (the hv30 and 35mm)
Just a tripod!
In regards to the contrast- thanks! I remember reading somewhere that film crushes the shadows- probably not near as much as this video though.
Soft box? Hmmm let me go see....400w each...although thats probably over rated as it is a cheapo brand (everlight?) I usually just set the white balance on tungsten - although I have fine tuned it with a grey card- I mostly use this for photography- bad idea right ? :)
Thanks! Her name is Josie...your kid is adorable as well.
By the way, why can't u measure the light with some meters and do exposure according to measured?
Otherwise you are just guessing with zebra, could be that in different scenes one has different colors of skin, for example...
Of course you have to know the light-losse of the adapter, but it's not a big deal I hope...
I'm trying to find out how to do it hv20.com/showthread.php?t=10798
but still no suggestions...
Thanks for the feedback! Yea, I need to get a light meter- you are totally right. I shoot photos too- so, it would be well justified. Also, I cant do zebra because I need the focus assist turned on.
1.4 is definitely wide open- the only lens for Nikon with manual control and 1.4- I believe is the 50mm- am I correct?
I actually bought the 28mm 2.0- I LOVE it- Honestly, I probably wont be using the 50mm as much....I might need to goto the 50mm 1.4 or 1.2 because that would give me more of a reason to switch the lenses out :).
Also, did you remove pulldown, and what are your export setting, cause it looks awesome!
Thanks alot, and once again great vid.
I am using the worley adapter with the Nikon Nikkor 28mm f2.0.
Yes, I did remove pull down....:) here are my export settings on premiere:

Your style is excellent, dark and light, good vibes and cut little family :)
But man you have to help me with 2 post questions, cause I know that alot of your questions have been hardware based, and I read you use FCP:
1. The look.. are you converting your footage (not sure where you are from so presuming you are filming 1080 60i, Im from Oz so I converting 1080 50i) to 24p using Cinema Tools or Nattress G Film Conversion, or have you kept that at 29.97 or 25p. I have had no end of trouble trying to find information about converting to 24 or 23.98 progressive from people, as it much be a well kept secret, and you seem to be pretty helpful and enthusiatic haha, I would love some hints on how you did it.
2. Did you colorgrade that using Magic Bullet or is that just the normal CC that comes with FCP, and the colors are just stunning because of the lens you use.
Thanks man, and you should be making music videos with your skill.. :)
I didnt use FCP to color grade, I used cineform, and their built in grading....
I am filming at 1440 x 960 @ 24p, using the cineform intermediate codec., the hv20/30 allows for that.
I am trying to geti nto the music video thing, thanks sooo much. :)
:)
I just got my HV20 a week or so ago and I love it. I'm turned away from 35mm adapters for two reasons:
Too many. Tons of people with HV20s get one to make it look "better." Not so much in my opinion.
And cause I've got a few GREAT Minolta/Sony lenses and there are no A-Mount adapters I don't think.
I have yet to shoot anything major or upload anything here, and this will probably be my only time taking time to comment someone else.
Being a Visual Effects artist and photographer I am CONSTANTLY thinking about how things were shot, how to do them, if it's a good composition, everything.
This little film didn't make me think of ANY of that. That's very rare.
The beginning was iffy, but I loved the rest of it. Such a cute little girl, a beautiful older girl, and you are very good looking as well =]
The way it shifts focus from the girl to you is plain beautiful. I liked the color correction you did, the only reason I didn't like the black is because it kinda crushed some detail I sometimes wanted to see in the girls.
Other than that. KEEP SHOOTING :D
I love your videos btw. the 50 people 1 question one is probably your most applauded and for good reason!
all the best, Ovi.
