Limited edition cut for Blank Code records Detroit.
The Transmute EP by Joel Morgan is the second release in Blank Code's new Limited catalog, which seeks to showcase the label's Detroit-based artists. This deep techno EP consists of two original tracks by Morgan paired with remixes by Brendon Moeller, both under his own name as well as his Echologist alias.
In "Adapt", Joel Morgan pairs a subdued echoing kick and tape asperity noise with occasional interludes of blissfully dubbed-out resonating chords. The track rises and falls in intensity with a spacious pace that allows each element to be appreciated individually. It is a relaxed counterpoint to the track responsible for the rest of the EP, "Morph." In this work, Morgan begins with a brooding broken kick pattern and ominous pads before exploding into an aggressive march fueled by echoing claps and glistening metallic hi-hats. The overall feeling of the track is cold and foreboding.
Both of the Brendon Moeller remixes play off of these moods by combining the chords from the original with lighter analogue-styled synth murmurs. The first of these is the "Brendon Moeller Re-morph," which utilizes a 303-sounding synth pattern and a heavy kick to set up a groove beneath the droning sounds of the original. Energy is lent to the mix using an eroded hi-hat pattern.
In the "Echologist Re-morph," Moeller seems to take the alternate approach by performing a live hardware jam with the sounds and patterns of the original as well as with external synthesizers until the sounds drift into a knob-twiddling experiment.
