that was beautiful, what lenses did you use?
  •
  • Van Royko plus 1 year ago
The parts that were RED cam were Zeiss superspeeds. All the 7d stuff was mostly a fairly mediocre Nikon zoom via an adapter.

  •
  • ¡¡¡Fantástico!!!
  •
  • did you use a 7D + magic bullet?
  • Van Royko plus 1 year ago
    RED+color and
    yes some 7d + MB

Thank you so much for sharing these images. Simply beautiful! The people on stilts, were they on their way to some sort of festivity/carnival? I love it!! Great work.

I didnt ask. I was too busy trying to make the most of the moment.
  • Nope, they are a troupe. Can't remember the name. They go about Old Havana and sometimes Centro Havana.
I remember some of its members were actively involved in the Cuban gay and lesbians rights movement.
  • Oh, BTW, Van Royko, hats off to you for the excellent work.

Did you ask the people in the video if you could record them?
  • Van Royko plus 1 year ago
    Some...

I didn't include anyone who specifically protested and this isnt a for profit venture so I feel morally secure.

Nonetheless, Cuban's were extremely natural in front of the camera and usually greeted me with a smile.

    hey, great shots.
as a photographer too, and having studied at the cuba international film school, i salute you.
as i already read some of your answers, you shot with RED and 7D, rignt? did you rent the RED over there, with the people from Island Film?
and the magic bullet that you referred, was the Final Cut filter?
You've had been in Havana before, or was this your first time?
As someone who lived there, i was really touched by some of the images.
    Gracias, compay!
    Cheers
  • Van Royko plus 1 year ago
thanks for looking and for your comments
the Red was my own- brought there for another project
it was my first time in Havana
and yes Magic Bullet for final cut. But I dont think its better than Color except that you can add vignettes more quickly and effectively.

that's my demo reel, with things made back there at the filming school. actually, there are some workshops from and for canadians at the school in cuba. And some interchange programs as well, between the school and some universities in Quebec.
i'm brazilian, and so if you're ever coming to Brazil to shoot something, look me up.
also, i'm buying a 7D as I already have some good canon lenses from the time i worked as a still photographer.
what are your opinions about this camera?
    thanks
  • Van Royko plus 1 year ago
    cool..nice reel

the 7d is a pretty nice little camera. the price/quality ratio is crazy good. i much prefer the 5dmkII though. the full frame depth of field isn't available in any other camera + the low light performance is so much better on the 5dMkII
  • Van Royko plus 1 year ago
thats a video i did with the 5dmkII

    thank..
    wath lens are used???
  • Van Royko plus 1 year ago
    nice shots

i was mostly using my old crappy nikon zoom with an adapter.

it would have been nice to have some real glass (l-series).

focusing ans stability was a real issue. next time ill get some real canon lenses.

Amazing video accompanied by timeless music - may Lhasa rest in peace! Stunning atmosphere.
  •
  • Luis Gustavo 1 year ago
Ideally with L series glass, but likewise has much merit by good shot.
RED camera did you use? is very difficult to lead a RED ONE to havana
or only you used your canon nikon zoom 7D?

as you've used both the 5D Mark2 and the 7D, how did you feel the problem of the panning movements? I've heard that the 7D is better in this aspect, of the shutter on the pannings.

Hola!
    Felicidades hermano!
    Gracias

Excellent photographic essay of a way of life that is clearly far from ideal.

The confident walk of the young lady to the Balcony overlooking the street gives rise to optimism for the country's revival.

Thank you for sharing this. Having always wanted to visit my parent's homeland, this caused me to reflect on what I might expect. I felt there were subtle commentaries among the scenes, although I'm not sure if they were there by design.
Last scene struck me as how I imagine Cuba itself; sassy and sexy yet also quiet and beautiful.
  • Van Royko plus 1 year ago
Im very happy you enjoyed it.
I feel the piece is more reflective than anything.
However by belief is that the meaning of a piece of art exists only between the artifice and the perceiver.

The intention of the 'artist' only exists as what the viewer sees it to be.
