Using the same principle as the Theremug vimeo.com/432353, a proof of concept for a freespace 2d controller.
It's more obvious in two dimensions that the amplitude of the ground loop isn't exactly related to distance as an inverse square. Any approximations for converting capacitance of two orthogonal "ribbon" plates into distance would be much appreciated... otherwise I'll do some more experiments and solve empirically :)
