This is a game project for S10-05833 - Gadgets, Sensors, and Activity Recognition in HCI taught by Scott Hudson at Carnegie Mellon University. I created a simple version of Super Mario Bros using an 8x8 LED matrix (one color), an Arduino Nano, two buttons for the input (forward and jump), and a piezo sensor hooked to a separate Arduino for the theme song.

Credits:
Scrolling code: Oomlout 8x8 Scrolling Message (oomlout.com/8X8M/8X8M-Guide.pdf)
Level maps: Super Pixel Bros (bit.ly/superpixbros) (transcribed by hand into bytes -- solid areas are 1's and empty areas are 0's)
Sheet music: mariopiano.com/mario-sheet-music-overworld-main-theme.html (transcribed notes are used with piezo code: arduino.cc/en/Tutorial/Tone)

i think it'd be more of a challenge and perhaps more elegant if the character was always moving right as though the move button is always pushed. thus creating a one button game ;)

I didn't know CMU offered a class like this. Can undergrads take it?
  • Chloe Fan 2 years ago
It's a grad-level class but I'm not sure if they offer it or one like it to undergrads. You can also take Mark Gross's "Making Things Interactive" class. I'd check with the professors.
  • Jordan Sinclair 2 years ago
Undergrads can take it. There are a bunch taking it now. I don't think the level of the class matters. If you want to take it, just talk to the prof.

I believe Gadgets is only every other year, but MTI is very frequent.

    D90 HD video mode is 720p not 1080p :p

    Good job for that !

Do you have a link for the Arduino sketches that you wrote? I don't see one in your credits list. Very nice port of super pixel bros!
  • Chloe Fan 2 years ago
Can you clarify what you mean by sketches?
  • Mackeyorama 2 years ago
I was wondering do you have the code ("sketch") that you uploaded to the Arduino Duemilanove for the music and the code that you used to make the game on the Arduino Nano. They should be the files that end with .pde.
I was planning on doing this myself with my 8X8 LED matrix so you would save me a bit of work. Thanks!

I studied electronics (I left it near completion) and I have to say: WOW... you made me realize those years...and the amazing things can be done with some resistors, wire and..(tons of knowledge and some microprocessors)

    amazing indeed!
