I started to notice the ‘space in between’, the stuff my sticky nightmares had been constructed of for the past 23 years. Yes, it was fair to say I had reached the parallel dimension you read about in propaganda magazines. I watched my hands move, as if through treacle, in slow motion and feeble. Like a virgin child I had slipped into it so easily, even though my mother had always warned me about this kind of thing. I noted your manic smile through my dim lit eyes, and decided that I would never inhale from that strange pipe again. For now I was preoccupied with the sound of my heart thundering around my ribcage, I was fully aware it could disown me in that instant. And even though I knew my body was in the arduous process of eliminating the toxins from my veins, I had never felt this alive. [Kim Shillam]
