Four telephones are spread around an art gallery. The phones allow participants to leave a short message telling what is on their mind at the moment. They can also listen to messages left by others throughout the show.

On the technical side, a Linux box running Asterisk powers this installation. Asterisk is an open source PBX software solution that uses relatively inexpensive hardware to replace older proprietary telephone systems costing tens of thousands of dollars. Instead of using it to operate phones and voicemail in an office environment, I reprogrammed it for this art installation. The system also uses a MySQL database to store and retrieve information about the messages.
