17. Can You Find the Photographers

It's a challenging game to see if you can spot where the photographers were in the video.

You know...they have special tools for those people:

Big shoes, size 50 with steel noses, a taser, a lasso or a giant hook!
There is also the funny way: go and stand very close to the photographer and sneeze very loud in his ear while he makes a photo and say 'I'm sorry, I have a bad cold'. He will stay off the radar for that day. Guaranteed!

I'm kidding about the taser by the way. ;-)

    Very 'funny' movie :-)

lol I now see the new meaning to the "trigger happy" or the "spray and pray" technique. Their killing their referrals, if I was part of this wedding I would want to see the bride and groom not the 2 clowns that happen to pop up at all the key special moments.

I feel ashamed to call myself a wedding photographer after watching that, they were truly dreadful!

Video and Stills need to work with each other at a wedding to deliver the best possible finished product to the bride and groom, those photographers looked like they were actively working against you!

Should have shoved the silly Fong dongs on their flashes where the sun dont shine!

Did you ask them if they owned a telephoto lens ?
  •
  • john johnston plus 1 year ago
Lol. what a shame. its the way they looked around at you and stopped bang centre of your view and started shooting. What did they say to you when you spoke to them?
  • L.A. Color plus 1 year ago
I spoke to them in the morning to introduce myself. Also talked about letting each other know if we are on each other's way. That's why you see there isn't much horrible footage during the day. However, at night when a third guy show up, they all work they way they want without respecting others.

I had to shoot a wedding under these conditions once. Fortunately the B&G understood and didn't blame me. And during the sermon, the only other sound you could hear was the clicking of two Nikon camera shutters, every second or two--very distracting.
But just imagine a bridezilla who won't pay the balance on her wedding video because her photographers prevented you from getting good footage!
  • L.A. Color plus 1 year ago
Oh the bride knew about it. I have to tell her up front. Also, guess what, this video is in the final DVD in the Bonus Feature =)

Just to be fair, there are some inconsiderate videographers too.
  •
  • Great video! Had a "pleasure" to work with such photographers a few times. I also like those who use video light for taking pictures and switching it on and off 5 times during the rings exchange or the cake or some other important event..... I was shooting a wedding in Hollywood. There was not allowed to photographers and video to be in any visible area. We were shooting behind the bushes from far away. May be it wasn't right but was some kind of fun :)

After wedding this photographers stayed alive?
  •
  • chocolate 1 year ago
honestly, I can see these are not big event or TV programme, just wedding ceremony, why use tripod on video camera? Don't tell me this is professional skill, because expert videographer always change their own sight to suit difficult condition.

Those photographer didn't do anything wrong because they shoot and move, they appear in your video is very common, as long as your got more than 1 video camera, these scenes should be deleted after editing, 3 hours video after edited can be just 15 to 30 mins, and that is long enough, because you are not producing a movie.

I don't know what is your purpose to show these deleted scene, I feel that you are threatening your customer if they not going to use your photographer. With this kind of attitude, you will just lose a lot of customers. Pls respect the whole team even they are not your photographer.

Why don't you think that, when videographer accidentally appear in photo, shall the photographer complain on the videographer (especially with the unfriendly tripod)? So far they didn't complain anything about that, but I believe they will, just when they see this video.
  • L.A. Color plus 1 year ago
If you don't find anything wrong with these photographers, you are probably just one of them. Act and function like paparazzi. We as professionals should respect the event and ceremony. Not only there're photographers and videographers, there's also live audience that their view is blocked by these photographers.

PS: YES WE ARE MAKING A MOVIE. The entire event is documented.
  • Jeff Wood Visuals pro 1 year ago
As a guest I would have been offended by those guys! As a groom I would have been mortified! As a videographer I would have been frustrated but you have made light of the situation with this funny piece. Well done.
  • Jesse Garrison plus 1 year ago
Videographers use long lens' why can't the photographers? These photographers were too lazy to swap out lens' and didn't care about being in the way of the guests view as well.

communication is the key to the problem.
And sometimes is about being professional,
when u meet people like this.
  • L.A. Color plus 1 year ago
Communication is the key to success. However it only works with people that are willing to communicate back and to have mutual respect.
  •
  • L.A. Color plus 1 year ago
Most people only think there's photographers and videographers here. In fact, there're 4 entities, photogs, videogs, B&G, and the live audience. What the photographers not only blocked the videographer but also the live audience's view.
  •
  • Sebastian Lee 1 year ago
From my point of view, i don't think it's fair to blame the photographers completely as i can see the wedding stage is seriously small for everyone to get their job done easy.

Of cause the idea solution is to work with some photographers who know your style of working, however as a professional videographer you may also need to be prepare to face any happening situation, specially working with photographers who doesn't know your working style. Every professional has their own difficulties to face, the photographers are doing their job as well and they have to answer to the client too.

Of cause you may show this video clip to your client to make them understand why you can't capture the moment but in the end, I believe the client will still be much happier to see their photos with no video tripod blocking, rather then having a "challenging game to see if you can spot where the photographers are in the video".

By the way, complaining doesn't always earn the benefits, because customer only wants the final result that worth every single cents they're paying.

    all the best to you.
  • L.A. Color plus 1 year ago
Well, again you are missing the point there're more than just the photographers and videographers in a wedding. In here, live audience view was blocked too. Should the audience need to talk to the photographer to suit his working "style"? It's common courtesy. You only see this kind of shooting style when paparazzi chasing movie stars.

I made this video not to complain or blame. It's for some laughs.
  • Sebastian Lee 1 year ago
I think the Wedding stage is just far away too small, so no one can completely escape " Block Free " to the live audience to get the job done too, so relax man, live is not always perfect.
  • L.A. Color plus 1 year ago
It doesn't matter how big or small the stage is. Even if the stage is big, they choose to stand 4 feet in front of them. That's the issue. You seem to keep finding excuse for that kind of behavior.
  • Sebastian Lee 1 year ago
Well, I don't have to find any excuses, because what the 2nd video guy did has already supported my point. In the video you can see he choose to stand 4 feet beside the B&G too, i think that explain " sometimes there are certain shoots you just have to get closer to your shooting object. "

So too bad you choose to set up your video on the tripod, with that kind of small wedding stage, it's not a wise idea to mount your video cam on the tripod and hoping for a "block-free" environment. Luckily you have a 2nd Video guy to help you, otherwise I don't know how are you going to answer that to your client.

As a professional Videographer, I think you need to invest a GLIDECAM HD-2000, not a still video tripod to do your job, you're not taking landscape. :)
  • I agree to both la color and sebastion on this one

Being a photographer myself, I'm ashamed of this. This is terrible.
Man, you've got iron nerves. I would shove that Gary Fong thing right up his a%%!
  •
  • Anton Khalikov 1 year ago
I am not a wedding photographer but still I would like to remind you that the light power density from flash decreases with distance in squared relationship. If you increase distance from flash to an object by 2, you have to increase the flash light density by 4. That's why you just can't use 200 mm lenses and take shoots from 10 meters position with Speedlite units.
  • alex k plus 1 year ago
You are right in your calculations, but here is the case about lack of courtesy and professional ethics.
In this video you can see a few times when this so-called pro photographer looks straight in the camera and realizes that he is right in the frame. And yet he keeps standing there, even he is not actually shooting at this moment. This is like spitting in the face!!
btw, this Gary Fong diffuser reduces the flash power like crazy. Not to mention it looks like sh#t ;0)
  • L.A. Color plus 1 year ago
It's exactly right. As professionals, we need to get the right type of equipment to do our job. We also have to respect the occasion and not to be intrusive.
  • Anton Khalikov 1 year ago
Guys I didn't argue with this point. You're absolutely right: this behaviour is unprofessional for sure. And yes I agree that these GF diffusors are far from being 'the best' specially in therms of loosing light density.

I watched this video again and found that they probably used 16-35 lenses which seems very strange to me. If I was there doing their job I'd prefer 24-70 for these shots. Or even 70-200 when doing shoots in the day light. Using 16-35 for close-up portraits is stupid because of their barrel distortion.

So back to mathematics: if you use 70mm for a portrait vs 35mm for the same shot, you need to increase your distance twice :)

I found a lack of professional ethics altogether, as the friend said they looked up to the camera and not even leave the environment, nonsense. Here in Brazil stuck forever working among friends for we will not have these problems. Thank God we work with friends and super happy. Hugs

We can set up a perimeter say a radius of 10 feet. Then every XXgrapher shoot shoulder to shoulder. So no one block anybody. Happy now?
Oh one more thing. There will be a sign on all XXXgrapher's back saying "professionals doing professional job professionally. All you people back there please wait. Meanwhile, please enjoy watching my A$$"
What about the audience? What audience?

  • Beemaster 1 year ago

L.A., a photographer's first job is to get the shot and I know you understand this. But these guys had a second agenda which was to screw up your video. That's entirely obvious. Real professionals are competitive but we usually figure out a way so everybody can work without stressing each other.

As a videographer Monday through Fridays and a photographer on the weekends, THIS is exactly why I shoot with my 70-200/2.8 at weddings: to stay out of the video team's way! I prefer sniping rather than being in the middle of those magical moments anyway... you get more natural, less distorted images when you're not up your subject's nostrils with an ultrawide!

You are a much more patient videographer than I am... those knuckleheads would have had a multi-column Manfrotto tripod shoved in a very uncomfortable place if they did that more than 5 times on one of my shoots! hahahaha

Thanks for sharing this (and part II)!

My question is, everyone wants to do a good job and get the best angle. Then who should be prioritized? Who should give way and who should compromise? I think the moment for a photographer to take a good shot is comparatively short compared to a video shot. If he has to look where the videographer is before taking every shot, he may have missed a lot of good shot.
  • L.A. Color plus 1 year ago
Professional photographers and videographers can do good job without jeopardize others work. Besides, it's a ceremony. We should respect the event even if you can't get a good shot. There're live audience as well. Get a long zoom lens. Then you don't have to walk 3 feet in front of the bride and groom to get a shot.
  •

I think communication is the key here and this two industry will always met each other in various of events.

Communications work only when both parties are willing to.. In this situation, I already communicated with them in the morning. If they decided not to care, there is no good way to avoid.

There were two or three monkeys with wide angle lenses jumping around - it is hard to believe these guys were a team. When I work with another photographer we put different lenses and work different angles and keep track of where each of the team is. If I were a groom - I'd most likely tell those guys to go for a walk and never come back

an important thing that i learnt from experience is that, no matter your're a videographer or photographer, you must always make your presence felt by the other videog/photog especially if he/she isn't someone from you team. no matter videog or photog, we must have good communication skills to prevent this kind of thing from happening.

having an eye for compositing shots don't make you a pro after all.
