IAIM Australia works to promote early parent-baby relationships. This archival footage shows the effect of touch and sensory deprivation on otherwise healthy babies. Trigger warning: the children in this video are experiencing extreme forms of neglect. The documentation/ filming of these babies played a pivitol role in addressing the needs of these babies, because at the time, people did not believe babies could experience depression...it was not understood that healthy touch and sensitive caregiving played a vital role in human well-being. Through the filming of these infants and describing/ sharing their conditions with the medical establishment, Dr. Spitz was able to bring about massive social change. While homes like this are no longer in operation in places like UK and Australia, many of these homes comtinue to operate in many other parts of the world. In addition, it is not uncommon for health workers in Australia to see babies with behaviours like these due to the lingering belief that healthy touch and responsive interaction is not a particularly important "priority" in infant care. The work of IAIM Australia - a nationally registered charity - focuses on ensuring all babies experience these early interactions, and instances of early emotional deprivation are reduced.
