The Southern Queensland region boasts history, agriculture, mineral wealth and charm. The district extends westwards from the Great Dividing Range to Charleville, north to Kingaroy, and south to Stanthorpe.
Drive through the alluringly-named Darling Downs and you're likely to see fields of grain, cotton, cattle and the promise of wine (in vineyards). With some of the richest soil in Australia, traditional farming sits alongside a recent boom in mining and gas production.
The region's hub is Toowoomba. Twice voted Australia's best city to live in, Toowoomba enjoys the rhythm of four distinct seasons. It is also Australia's second largest inland city, though locals prefer it to be known as Australia's largest non-capital inland city.
Other major centres in the region are Warwick, Stanthorpe, Dalby, Roma and Goondiwindi.
Local celebrities include the Lamington, the race horse Gunsynd and Geoffrey Rush
