This is a short film that was directed by the French animation collective H5, François Alaux, Hervé de Crécy + Ludovic Houplain. It was presented at the Cannes Film Festival 2009. It opened the 2010 Sundance Film Festival and won a 2010 academy award under the category of animated short.

In this film there are two pieces of licensed music, in the beginning and in the end. All the other music and sound design are original. The opening track (Dean Martin "Good Morning Life") and closing track (The Ink Spots "I don't want to send the world on fire") songs are licensed pre-existing tracks. Glyphing

Working on a covert project that may or may not be related to my next letterpress poster (see cameronmoll.bigcartel.com/category/posters ).

I'm attempting to reproduce glyphs that are roughly 460 years old. These glyphs are taken from "Libro di M. Giovambattista Palatino," a book possibly on or about the typography work by Giambattista (or Giovambattista or Giovanni Battista) Palatino, the master Italian calligrapher.

The black 'N' you see in the video is a tracing I did by hand using prints from the original book, scanned later digitally. The red 'N' is the new work done in Adobe Illustrator based on the tracing. This glyph took about 35 minutes to create. My work was captured using iShowU (Mac), sped up 3000% and edited using Final Cut Express.

In March 2009, Suzanne (wife) and I spent several days in Rome to celebrate our 10-year anniversary. This was also a chance to observe in detail the Coliseum, which I'd already selected as the next subject in my series of letterpress posters (see cameronmoll.bigcartel.com/category/posters).

Over the course of the next 12 months, the artwork was handcrafted character by character, totaling roughly 250 hours of work from start to finish. Characters from the Goudy Trajan and Bembo Pro typefaces form the Coliseum, also known as today as Colosseo (Italian) and originally known as Amphitheatrum Flavium (Latin).

I shot the video shown here using a Canon 7D, with Suzanne's assistance for my interview segment. Edited with Final Cut Express. I picked up the 7D literally the day before shooting at Bjørn Press, so I still have lots to learn. (I botched my interview part by failing to turn off sharpening before shooting and by not having Suzanne sit at the same height while interviewing me, hence my eyes focus differently in each segment. But oh well, it is what it is.)

The opening segment was filmed at 1280/60fps, then in FCE it was slowed down and resized to fit the rest of the footage, which was shot at 1920/30fps. The 7D makes it really easy to pull off high-quality slow motion.

Font used for the titles is Bembo Pro.

End Scene

This video was made by Steffen Bygebjerg in 2009 for the song "End Scene". The track is taken from Troels Abrahamsen's album WHT also from 2009.

The animation work was made in Adobe After Effects. Each frame was then printed and the print was subsequently scanned back into the computer. The scanned frames were then assembled back into the original animation, now with a new rugged look, created by the visit in the physical analogue world. No effects added after scanning.

Here a quick look to my workflow:

1) converted mov into cineform HD avi file
2) premiere cuts and import prproj into aftereffects
3) after effects time warp 100% to 10% speed (with alot of keyframes on pixel motion accuracy to avoid artifacts)
4) rendering in TGA sequence (to speed up next steps)
5) Timeremapping to do final adjustments on clip speed
6) directional blur applied on tga sequence to simulate motion blur
7) colorcorrection (with curves, levels, blur, masks, transfer mods ecc)
8) light effects to hide cuts
9) text with motion blur
10) import aep in premiere, rendering the work area
11) sound design (thx to Vangelis for "la petite fille de la mer")
12) final export

So this year I took a little bit different approach to my annual year in pictures review. Not only did I make a web album of my 80 favorites of 2009 from my photo library. But I decided to take a trip to Mama's Sauce and print out 40 of my favorites to give to my nearest and dearest as christmas presents.

Meet Nick Sambrato. He runs a print shop in Orlando, Florida called Mama's Sauce.

Nick isn't a very smart guy. At a time in history when the print industry is pouncing from one space-age technological advancement to the next, Nick has decided to take a giant leap backwards into the industrial revolution.

Meet the Kluge letterpress. An 2,000 pound, cast iron, electric powered monstrosity of vacillating rods, giant spinning wheels and pneumatic hoses. The Kluge is Nick's weapon of choice in his battle against the future.
So why does Nick use the Kluge? A clearly outdated, cumbersome and obsolete machine? The same reason any craftsman uses any tool: for the quality of the finished product. A letterpress offers a tangible, three-dimensional look and feel to the printed image that no other technology can replicate.

Let Nick take you on a trip back in time as he runs through the process of turning an ordinary piece of paper stock into work of art.

Create a 30 sec. kinetic typography animation, based on a movie part, or any kind of audio recording... I chose a part from the famous French movie "À Bout De Souffle" (Breathless) by Jean-Luc Godard, 1960. In that part, Jean-Paul Belmondo is driving alone in his car, talking to the camera...
In my animation, I attempted to reproduce that "in a moving car" feeling, where everything is shaky, as well as the old film look and old style animation...

The White Concert

The best selling Beatles album, The White Album, turned 40 in 2008, and was celebrated with a big concert last december in Horsens - The White Concert, which also could bee seen live at DR1. The good old MTV man Ray Cokes was the host of the evening, lots and pots of scandinavian bands played their versions of the loved songs, and last but not least STUPID contributed with the motion graphics.
The logo for the show was designed by Siegel Design.

The video was shortlisted in the Motion Graphics category of the danish advertising awards: Creative Circle.
