Adam Spence commented on How does Vimeo's encoding affect the colors in your video? in the Forums Saturation and contrast are heavily reduced. Even turning the gamma down to ridiculous levels doesn't compensate. I don't encounter the problem with YouTube or Facebook.

I would think it's about future proofing as much as anything. Few saw television going widescreen, and yet a few directors/cinematographers framed their shows so that they could be more easily cropped in the future. 4K screens are starting to be released
