The visuals have a narrative quite connected to the song's actually, even if obviously its really loose. The song's narrative is really clear, and I decided to interpret its meaning in a metaphorical way, telling the story of the main boy's struggle to disconnect with the demons of his past, and going through change. The dragon is Cecelia, represents the strains of past and comfort, the jackal is cecelia's sister and represents new desires.
In that way, the visuals and the song connect together at those points you mentionned (friends, war paint etc) as the two stories are the same but told a different way.
At the end you see the dead dragon, and a self inflicted wound that tells of disconnection and re-birth.
Indeed its pretty loose, but I hope the visual narration is present enough to hold the film together

Basically yeah, most of the video is drawn with coloured pencils for the red, and inks for black. Some black pen as well for details. I drew it negative like you said, but red instead of blue, and shifted the hue 180º as well as inverting the drawings. This way i could control the colour on paper, as drawing it blue/green wasn't precise enough colour wise to have a nice red when turned positive.
