Circular Influences II is an immersive, animated environment. Strands of taut elastic suspend thirty small fans. The resulting “figures” are organized into “communities” by a rotating machine that controls patterns of activation. People tune into the shifting sounds of fans in different on/off combinations, and become aware of spatial volume in the environment. The changing, invisible breezes make the negative space in the work palpably active. People can anthropomorphize the “figures in community” within various systems on a number of scales – from landscape, to body, to psyche. Some viewers take in an overall impression, seeing a forest or synapses in the brain. Others associate human mannerisms with the way the fans “heads” bob, swing and speak.
