DAAR Stockholm Architectural Rehab Camp

Hosted on the island of Väddö, Norrtälje, (Sweden) by Iaspis and the collaborative architectural practice Decolonizing Architecture Art and Architecture Residency (DAAR) in Betlehem and Beit Sahur.

Sandi Hilal, Alessandro Petti and Eyal Wiezman (DAAR) reshaped their invitation to the Iaspis residency programme into this semi-public camp in the archipelago 120 km north of Stockholm. The invitations were sent out both as an open call and with some invited contributors. Playing with formats, the idea of residencies, hospitality and creating meetings between peers, the camp hosted 120 guests over a two week period. The participants were architects, urbanists, philosophers, product designers, choreographers, activists, artists, and curators from countries including Germany, Great Britain, Holland, Israel, Italy, Lebanon, Norway, Palestine, Sweden, and the United States of America.

The program grew organically with the contributing guests depending who were present on site at any given time. It offered opportunities to explore the conditions for “Planning the Common”, touching upon the historic use of the notion of commons in an international context as well as the Swedish application of the “Right of Public Access” (Allemansrätt) - an extensive version of the concept of “the right of common”. Smaller group conversations and spontaneities such as outdoor activities like rowing and fake yoga sessions were mixed with commissioned artistic interventions, performances, lectures, film screenings and staged spatial situations.

The guests came and went in constant flux; the average stay lasting 3-4 days, whereas some stayed the full period or a week, others only for a day. Every day and night the camp was inhabited by 20-40 participants. All meals were cooked as a joint effort.

Organised by Annika Enqvist (Iaspis) in collaboration with DAAR 6-20 June 2011.
