"I only started work a few weeks ago; I barely noticed how quickly my world changed. My fascination, once nothing but a child's fantasies, of beautiful china dolls and rocking horses, had shifted to a black and white universe--my clothes signified my initiation into the adult world, but my surroundings had yet to catch up. It's like I leave behind little parts of me every time I step outside those comforting pink walls..."
I decided to sum up the metaphor in an interview-style paragraph from the girl in the film. Her two favourite dolls stay behind, signifying that their place is no longer with her, but within the room, and in that room, they tend to get restless.
I tried to give the film a sort of glitched, disjointed look in places to give it a surreal feeling but at the same time reminding the viewer that it's only video. I used repetition a lot in this film to convey the feeling of everything being the same but somehow also drastically different. Every step and movement is timed to match either the melody of the violin or the light-hearted beat of the xylophone, giving the scene an eerie presence--the perfect living doll playground.
