Being a nocturnal type doesn’t really mesh well with early morning wake up calls.

But when I got the green light to head to the Big Island last weekend for the Second Annual Don the Beachcomber Mai Tai Festival, there I was at Honolulu International Airport just after eight in the morning. Not exactly bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, as the saying goes… but I was there."

“That was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had,” Self said on Tuesday. “I was completely shell-shocked when they called my name. It took about two days for it to sink in. It’s still a really good feeling.”

Despite the win, however, he added that he got a lot of satisfaction out of meeting the other competitors and sharing his bar knowledge with them.

“I got to meet a bunch of really cool people on the Big Island who I never met before,” he said. “There were people there who never competed before, so it was cool to help them out.

“That’s what’s fun for me.”
Dean Kaneshiro,
Thank you for shooting this with me. Just remember, the ABC Discount store is never as far as they say it is. In fact, it's right around the corner. I am using a metaphor right now. I think. The point is, that our Arizona raspberry iced tea is not far off. When did this note turn gay? Um, thanks (Manly high 5).

THANK YOU: Christa, Summer, Keli'i, Joey, Better Brands, Bacardi, The Royal Kona, Paul, The Elks Lodge cook dude, other people, Christian, Tim, Jessica, that one judge from Costa Rica, the dude who didn't charge us for over-weight baggage @ the airport, (not the girl who DID charge us on the way back. Boo to you. Mainly because I don't think you're reading this.) THANK YOU EVERYONE who is not someone, who I shouldn't be thanking. So. MUCH. FUN. I saw dolphins up close. It was cool.
