This video presents a work-in-progress feature from Gephi 0.7 version. A small network is displayed with 3 different groups, one per color. What we call "potatoes" are these areas around nodes of the graph. They unify nodes from the same group (i.e. cluster).
A spatialization algorithm is running and moves nodes according to their links. Potatoes are refreshed continuously when moving.
Note: What we like to call potatoes are also named metaballs or implicit surfaces.
Gephi is an open-source network visualization and manipulation software.
