Schooner Amistad
Amistad America Inc. is an internationally recognized non-profit educational organization headquartered in New Haven, Connecticut.
We own and operate the traditional wooden schooner S/V Amistad, the official tall ship of the State of Connecticut.
Each year the Amistad tours ports throughout the Atlantic Ocean that have historical significance to the story of the Atlantic Slave Trade - from the US East Coast to Europe, West Africa and the Caribbean.
As an educational organization, our mission is to provide a transformative experience for students through an intense and direct reexamination of the history of the Atlantic Slave Trade and its legacy found throughout the nations of the Atlantic Basin. We believe that confronting that past in an academically rigorous and experiential manner can profoundly enlighten students about the struggles for freedom that has marked nearly 400 years of history.
Our window into that history and its legacy is the inspirational story of the Amistad Incident of 1839; it is the story of the determination of a small group of kidnapped Africans to seize their freedom and the story of the black and white abolitionists who joined with them, ultimately to win their freedom before a pro-slavery U.S. Supreme Court – the first such victory in American history.
We believe that through the development of a comprehensive understanding of the Amistad Story students acquire a broader appreciation of the international and interconnected history of the United States, Europe and the countries of Africa and the West Indies. This foundation of understanding allows for the development of critical thinking skills and a greater appreciation for the complex legacy that remains as the result of the systematic exploitation of more than 400 years of chattel slavery.
