I thought the ’BrownPolar Verdict’ on LoveFilm for Steven Soderbergh's little experimental gem, ‘The Good German’ would say all we need to utter about this video:
The Good German 2006 | USA | Ger | [15]
Directed by: Steven Soderbergh
Starring: Cate Blanchett | George Clooney | Tobey Maguire
Music: Thomas Newman
Studio: Warner Home Entertainment
Genres: Drama | Political Thriller
“While in post-war Berlin to cover the Potsdam Conference, an American military journalist is drawn into a murder investigation which involves his former mistress and his driver” (From LoveFilm Introduction).
That’s all there to the paper-thin plot of this unusual movie, on the surface at least. But it’s premise, all the same, is to paint a dark, sobering and virtually realistic picture of the cruel, desolate and post-apocalyptic environment of Berlin and the irredeemable and ghostly souls that inhabit it, with increasingly waning hope of finding salvation, in the aftermath of one of the most destructive conflicts of human history.
Soderbergh, as he always does, delivers this dark vision in unembellished black and white, as clinically and emotionlessly as a surgeon amputates a irreparable leg of a patient, almost as if to remind us that there is no way humanity shall ever be forgiven for its inhumanity during the second world war, not to mention its continuing barbarism to this very day!
