Between breaking into New York City’s subway system, jumping from rooftops with the world’s greatest parkour athletes and taking the field with the Boston Red Sox, director/cinematographer Andrew Wonder has taken filmmaking to new visceral level.
Andrew began his career as a camera operator and field producer for MTV at the age of 17. Less than three years later he was accepted into the International Cinematographers Guild while attending NYU for film. Throughout school he worked his way up as a cinematographer and shot his first feature film, Michael Almereyda’s New Orlean Mon Amour (SXSW 2008), before his 21st birthday. After NYU, Andrew was tapped by filmmakers including Antoine Fuqua, Harris Savides, ASC, Paul Schrader and Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer David Turnley, to implement his technical knowledge, ingenuity and unique style of working with cameras like the Canon 5D Mark II.
Wonder’s recent documentary, Undercity, is a fascinating and daring exploration of New York’s subways, abandoned tunnels, sewers and bridges. The gritty film, shot with a Canon 5DmkII, explores this overlooked underworld, the art that colors it and the characters who call it home. Besides earning himself an appearance on NBC’s The Today Show the film was also covered by CNN, the Huffington Post, and Wired.com.
