Alta Time Lapse

This is my first time lapse video. Like the title says, it's captured in my hometown, Alta, which is very far north in Norway.

I've used the digital SLR Pentax K10D to capture it using a wire release with a timer on it (a video review of the wire release is coming at a later time). Capturing this is the last thing I did with it before I sold it. I'm now waiting for my new white Pentax K-x.

Lights on Merrimac Ridge features 43,000 lights, 130 amps of power and 112 channels of light controlling goodness. This year we have a mix of d-light and LOR (Light-o-Rama) controllers running with LOR S2 software. The build time was several months and it took about five days to completely errect the display. Come by our display at:

The complete show runs 15 minutes and is on Sun-Thur 6pm until 10pm and Fri-Sat 6pm until 11pm. The last night for the display will be Friday Jan 1st 2010.

Pentax K-x Test Shoot

I just got a Pentax K-x and have done some quick tests using the video function. All of this was shot using an old Pentax 50mm prime lens with 2x converter (both are anywhere from 10-20 years old, not too sure).

The footage toward the end of the film was shot indoors at night with pretty bad lighting and has gained some artifacts thanks to the conversion for the web.

I haven't done any grading to the footage, this is basically raw. Obviously I had to convert it for the web, but I've tried to keep it as high res as possible.

Music is from a Syndey act, Megan Washington, but you'll find her on iTunes simply under "Washington". Check her out, great EP out at the moment.

This pixilation (stop-motion animation using real people) was made in 2006 for Screen South as part of the UK Film Council's Digital Shorts scheme. As much as possible, it was made 'in camera' without digital superimposure, using thousands of printed materials.

In answer to some of the questions below and others I've been frequently asked:

The whole film took about a year: roughly three months each for development, prep, shoot and post - although due to the nature of the film, part of the post bled into the shoot.

The programs I used were Photoshop, Premiere 6.5 and some bespoke programs I coded myself (a 3D animatic planning program and another to smooth out some of the tracking shots). To be honest my machine and the software weren't up to what I needed from them, and I would have a much better time of it now, with my macbookpro, FCP and a tablet...

I used a Canon Eos 350D Digital SLR to shoot, and took roughly 26,000 photos overall.

I don't know about anyone else, but I could watch macro footage of jellyfish all day long... seriously. Something about it that makes me feel tiny and in awe :P

Maybe it's because there's no scale reference in much of this video... and I can easily imagine I'm surrounded by bus-sized translucent jellyfish...

Okay... does anyone know if there is an IMAX movie about jellyfish? Cause if so, I need to go see that.

Description:

I quitt skateboard movies when I entered film school.

Now, after 5 years I came back to develop a new style of narration in skateboard movies.
Together with Chris Heck, who is also a protagonist in this movie we try to make our way.

Quentin Tarantino always chilled in the video rental store and was bored of all the same movies. The same happened to with me and all the Skateboard videos.

So,
"Born To Skate" it is a roadmovie, which does not only show skateboarding, but life in its true sense.

It´s my masterwork in filmschool in germany
The film itself will be about 60- 90 minutes long.
There is still, a lot of hard work has still to be done.

Many people don't understand why some choose to travel on a bicycle. I was one of them... then I tried it. Now I don't want to do it any other way.

This video is an attempt at providing a glimpse into the challenging, exciting, and incredibly rewarding world of cycle touring.

The clips are from a Summer 2007 trip, about 4500kms from Kashgar, Xinjiang, to Dali, Yunnan (in China) crossing Tibet along the way.
