Made away from light pollution in the forest near Ely, MN, the work is the outcome of a slow and natural process. Created by applying a fine charcoal dust to paper, the sheets of paper are placed outdoors at night and illuminated by a single light source. The light is timed like an exposure. As moths and nocturnal insects are attracted to the light, they leave a random imprint. After one to two hours the marks begin to reveal the position and scope of the light source above the paper, the area where more dust has been removed. At night moths use light from the moon and night sky to navigate. In the presence of near-by light, moths are thrown into confusion. It suggests a kind of evolutionary failure; moths persist as an anachronism in an increasingly manufactured habitat.
