A Planet In Space
With two full drum kits, guitar, bass, two vocalists, samples and keys, A Planet In Space comprise a unique blend of genre crossing music that enables them the freedom to explore all possibilities of past and present musical cultures while creating a sound that is both new and recognisable.
With this unorthodox line-up and only four members, A Planet In Space are not your typical progressive roots/rock act and present in performance a landscape that spans beautiful heart-warming melodies of life's personal tales of misadventure, stunning musicianship, manic tribal rhythms and drastic, yet seamless shifts in genre and mood.
With so many influences and inspirations this gives them the determination to strive towards their lifelong passion to free themselves and treat every performance as their last. To create a moment...
Each member of A Planet In Space has had vastly different musical upbringings with a classically trained guitarist holding a Bachelor of Music Performance from The Victorian College of the Arts to a Jazz trained guitarist with a soul that has to be witnessed to be believed. Both drummers have also had quite different training in their craft studying under artists such as Darryn Farrugia (Hey Hey Its Saturday) and Gerry Pantazis (Tommy Emmanuel, Dancing with the Stars). Despite their stylistic differences, all share a love of the connection and energy that is made on stage between artist and audience.
In 2007 just months after forming, they secured a residency at The Evelyn Hotel, located in the heart of one of Melbourne's cultural hotspots, Fitzroy. This weekly residency was to continue for 6 months, long into Melbourne's cold winter. They have also performed at many other venues around Melbourne, including the Espy's Gershwin Room, Laundry, Arthouse, Ding Dong, a 1 year monthly residency at blues and roots institution St. Andrews Hotel, and closed the Saturday night at the 2008 Eltham Jazz & Blues Festival.
During the first half of 2008 A Planet In Space have been focusing on their debut album which is being recorded and produced entirely by the band in their own studio. The first single She Don't Wanna Dance received excellent praise on Triple J's Unearthed, spending many weeks at number 1 on the Roots chart, number 2 on the overall chart, and also received airplay on Triple J's Drive, Home & Hosed and Roots shows along with other Melbourne stations.
The success of their Triple J Unearthed debut gave them the opportunity to head up to Sydney in support of Afro-Columbian rock act Watussi and also country Victoria for shows that received much acclaim from both the punters and other artists.
