Karen Straus started diving in 1968. She became an instructor in 1970 and taught Scuba for the next 10 years. At the same time she began writing about and photographing marine life. Karen spent the bulk of her career as a newspaper and magazine journalist, also working for several years on wildlife documentaries as a writer, photographer, and field producer. Since retiring this year, she travels and dives with her husband, photographer/writer Eric Hanauer. Karen was elected to the Women Divers Hall of Fame in 2011 and serves as an officer of the San Diego UnderSea Exhibition Board of Directors. She is active with the San Diego Audubon Society as a volunteer. She has been birding for 5 years.
