  • Presenting Vimeo Plus!

For years, everyone has been asking us to launch a paid account option on Vimeo.

"It's coming soon, it's coming soon!" is what you've heard from us for quite a while. Well, we weren't just making excuses. We were locked deep in the Vimeo HQ, tapping away at our keyboards, building a service that we could be proud of and that you would find irresistible.

    Introducing Vimeo Plus.

We like to say "It's Vimeo, plus more awesomeness." First and foremost, it's 300% more space for your videos. This is the most frequent request from you guys, so we're glad to be able to offer you 2GB per week with Vimeo Plus. The videos you upload will have priority conversion and your SD videos will be converted at higher quality. And you thought they looked good before!

The second-most requested feature from you has been HD embedding, and Vimeo Plus makes that a reality as well. You get 1,000 HD embed plays with your Plus account, and adding more through our store is super easy. Now your website will look slicker than ever, with streaming HD video in Vimeo's well-designed player.

Speaking of the embed player, customization is the name of the game with Vimeo Plus. You have a totally liberating amount of options for your embedded videos. Now you can finally control every aspect of the player, from what's shown at the beginning and end, to the player buttons, even down to which sites are allowed to embed your video.

All of this in a completely Ad-Free environment. That's right, when you buy Plus, banner ads disappear from Vimeo, leaving you with the cleanest experience in online video sharing you can find anywhere. Stop by the Vimeo Plus page to check it out and purchase your Plus account. And if you know any other Vimeo fans, you can buy a Vimeo Plus account for them right from our store.

For those of you who are sticking with the free account, here's the deal: you're going to have some new limitations. First of all, you'll only be able to upload one HD video per week. You will also be limited to creating 1 Group, 1 Channel and 3 Albums. It really does pain us to impose these limits, because we want you all to be happy, productive Vimeans, but we feel that if you're going to be a power user, you should help us keep Vimeo working by purchasing a Plus account. We appreciate your support more than you'll ever know. The good news is that you keep all of your existing Groups, Channels and Albums, even if you remain a free account user.

    Stay cool,

    The Staff of Vimeo

  • Introducing password protected albums!

If you go to your albums in Vimeo you will notice a few new features: new settings interface, new album arrangement options, and most importantly, album password protection.

Ever since we launched albums, we've heard this a lot:
"Oh, please please please make private albums! I think this would be the best feature ever.... It's such a hassle having to send my friends & family members individual links for private videos. It would be so great to be able to send them one link to a private album. Then, they only have to enter the password one time & have access to tons of private videos in a single album... That would be so great!!!! Thanks again :) "

You asked for it, and we listened.
Password protected albums allow you to share multiple private videos at a time with your friends and family. Please remember that all the videos in the Album will be viewable when the user types in the password. Also, when you share this album with someone, Vimeo will automatically send the password with an email notification.

  • Weekend Project: The People In Your Neighborhood

    Fire up those cameras!

The Weekend Project for this week: Who are the people in your neighborhood?

Get out of your house and head to a place where you often hang out. Your local coffee shop, video rental store, yoga studio, pizza joint, soup kitchen, etc. Find someone who works there and have a casual conversation with them about their life then edit it down to the most interesting parts.

This one is tricky, because people are often shy or nervous about you filming them at work, but that's the CHALLENGE! Be confident, respectful, and make them feel comfortable and you're sure to get some interesting bits on tape. Ask permission, but again, confidence is key to walking into a place and making everyone feel OK about filming.

Make sure to add your video to the Weekend Project Group.

As always, only add videos that you make specifically for this project, no old videos you've already made or uploaded before.

The staff will give 100MB of upload space to the video we like the bestest. We will accept submissions till Monday night, so get crackin!

We always look forward to these!

UPDATE: The winner of this week's project is Alan Natale, with his video "Torry: A Video Snapshot." Thanks to everyone for participating!

  • Enter the Climate Matters video contest!

By now we are all well aware that climate change is a real and inevitable issue facing our world. Much has been done to help combat these issues, but there is still an uphill battle facing us when it comes to government legislation to secure the future of our planet. It is up to us, as citizens of a country largely responsible for these climate issues, to speak out and let our voices be heard that climate matters! And as we well know, images often speak louder than words. So here is where you come in:

As you may have noticed already, Vimeo is proudly hosting the Climate Matters Video contest!

To enter the contest, create a video that sends a message to congress concerning climate change. Videos should be 30 or 60 seconds in length and should not address any specific political movement or candidate. Tag the video with 'climatematters'. Read the contest rules for more information.

Winning entries will receive up to $3000 dollars in prizes and will also be broadcast on national TV. Judges (and there are some famous ones) will pick the winners based off of creativity, coherence of message, potential impact of message on political leaders, and the inspiring message.

This is your chance to let your voice be heard and stand up to congress on climate change. You only have one week left, so enter now!

  • Weekend Project: Make it abstract

    Its that time again!

The Weekend Project for this week: Make it abstract

Take a setting, object, person, story, etc and both film and edit it in an abstract way. This technique is up to interpretation really, but the idea is to change the traditional idea of that subject though filming and editing style.

Make sure to add your video to the Weekend Project Group.

As always, only add videos that you make specifically for this project, no old videos you've already made or uploaded before.

New this week: The staff will give 100MB of upload space to the video we like the bestest. We will accept submissions till Monday night, so get crackin!

    Have fun and be creative.

  • One million videos

I've been looking forward to saying this for a long time: there are now one million videos hosted on Vimeo.

Amazingly, 100,000 of them are HD, making Vimeo the largest repository of high definition video anywhere in the world.

Although I'm proud of these records, I'm more proud of the way community, quality, and creativity has grown to accommodate them. We're projecting an additional 130,000 uploads this month and Vimeo feels just as intimate and friendly as it did in January of 2005 when we had all of 3 new videos.

If you've uploaded, commented, or clicked a like button the past 4 years you've helped make Vimeo what it is-- a burgeoning group of video makers and watchers who appreciate real, personal, hand-made artwork. I know I speak for the entire staff when I say that we are all very proud to be able wake up in the morning and help build such a positive place.

So thanks! We'll enjoy watching the next million as much as we did the first.
